Ride it like u would normally! Dont baby it or the rings will not seat right and u will have a weak motor . But do the oil change right away around 400 mi, so any metal chavings can be fluched out. After that its once a year.

well 12km on the sled today with the boy. Did a variety of speeds and opened it up a few times. It is a totally different feel and ride then the old 93 Safari this is replacing. I can tell already this machine will have all the power I will need.

What they dont want you to do,is go out and hold it to the bars for miles at a time, under 300 miles, but you only have a very small window of time to seat those rings properly, and trust me,and others who break in there motors this way,you will have a fast sled down the road, with no oil issues. Just wind it up full throttle for 8 thru 10 seconds, than back off,and do it again ,and again, than let it cool off a little, having the snow is perfect for your coolant to stay at the desired temps, and your slides, will like you more too,at the end of 5-10 miles you will be at full rpm, which is 10,500 right out of the box, after break in,you may even see 11,000 on some very hard pack snow, after a mile or so,once broke in,most of us have in the past,i have broke in 6 apex/attaks/rx1's this way all run very strong.new4stroker said:mnmsnowbeast said:If you have 3" of snow,go find a field,or long gravel driveway, about 1/4 mile long, and just rip it hard back and forth, wfo, for 8012 second bursts, you only have 20 miles or so,to break in your rings, and you want to do it,under a good load, just dont hold it for a mile, until you got 50 miles or so,every 4-stroke we have broke in this way,all run very fast, and burn no oil. So what are ya waiting for,go have fun,it wont even rev up to 10,000 right out of the box,but if you do what i suggest, after about 5-8 miles of that ,it will, and you will feel the extra power coming on,but just take a few breaks in between, and let it cool down some,no need to cool it down to stone cold, but dont keep hammering it,till it starts pinging.new4stroker said:I have had the itch since before the new 0 mile sled has been in the garage. This morning the lawns are covered and its still snowing. Oh Yeah sledding will happen soon. How much snow do you guys wait for to take the toy on its first ride of the year? I am more then likely going to wait till I have a good 3 to 4 inches but man it will be hard to not just take it out for a quick opening test drive and start the break in process. (not too many places to go anyway as all the water is not frozen over yet anyway)
Interesting the yamaha books say the following for break in.
1) no excessive load 300 miles
2)0-100 miles no prolonged over 6000rpm
3)100-300 miles no prolonged above 800rmp
over 300 miles good to go.
I guess the short bursts do fit in this model as well. Have you guys waited the 300 miles to ride normally? That seems like a long break in time but then again it sets the sled up for life.

thanks for the tips guys. Next time out I will try and go without the boy for at least the first bit and do the 8 - 10 second bursts of wide open.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

I've ridden on state owned trails in November with 8-12" of snow - but trails don't officially open until December 1, so I wait until then for any that cross private property.

Trails that don`t open till December??? never heard of that before. Whats the reasons for the late open?

In central NY, have to wait till about 2nd-3rd week due to hunting season still going on. Usually don't have enough snow anyways.
