Looking for some advice from LB or Turk or some other of the good guys. I do not fog my RX-1 in the spring but I start it every week or so all summer. About a month ago it started to idle at about 3000 and I could not get it to drop down to around 1500 were it usually runs at idle. I put some carb cleaner in the gas and some fresh gas in with the old stuff. We have lots of snow now so I went for a few trips on the weekend and thought it wouls smarten up. Well when I start it with the choke and then turn the choke off it idles dead nuts 1300 but when I stop after riding and let it idle it stays at 2500. I do not want to pull the carbs if I don't have to. Any ideas, (maybe gas gone bad in the float bowls and carbs?

Just manually turn down the idle & see what happens. If it is not activating the TORS switch maybe just doing this will help. Wish I had more for ya.

That sounds very strange. Make sure that the throttle is snapping back fully, that the tors switch on the carb side isn't damaged, and that the slides are all operating smoothly. You can check the slides by taking the top off the airbox and lifting the slides by hand and seeing that they drop fully when released.

If those checks all check out, then you should check for gum in the carbs - leaning out at idle can sometimes cause an increase in idle speed. I would be hesitant about just lowering the idle without knowing for certain that it was maladjusted, since you can damage the engine if the carbs aren't right, but since its not a 2-stroke, at least it won't go off like a grenade.

Is the machine stored in such a situation where something like, say, "small fingers" may have affected it?

Here's another thought:

If there is gum in the carb body of one of the carbs, then the butterfly valve may not be snapping back fully from that point on, which would result in the throttle cable fully retracting and the tors being normal, but having one or more carbs still not fully closed. Check visually and or check carb synchronization when its idling wrong. Also, if you do as Turk suggests, and the problem is gummed butterfly valves, then it will idle very rough at low speed.

Clean your carbs! Had a customer bring in his sled this weekend with the exact symptoms! Cleaned the carbs and it was fine!

Thank You all. This is one great site. Your answers are all very well thought out and very helpful. I will let you know how I make out solving this. Have to fly to Yellowknife for eye surgery this weekend but should be riding again in two weeks or so.
