I know I have to pay the RIV fee ($209) and GST at the border, but being the sled is made in Japan is their duty to pay as well? I know there isn't any duty on Doos because they are made in North America.
Thanks

It depends on the border crossing you go to.
I have heard from several people they had to pay and additional 4% duty b/c the sled is made in Japan. When they do the 72 hr search at the border on your individual machine, they can see if the out of north america duty was paid by the original owner if the sled was bought used. If it is a sled you buy from a dealership, the duty will be paid in the original cost that the dealership paid, which you will pay in the price.
When I bought my 07 apex rtx last fall, they tried to charge me the extra at the derby line border crossing. I told them they better check the records again b/c I bought the sled used and it would of been paid buy the original purchaser. Only thing I paid at the border was gst. I sent them a cheque within 45 days for the riv fee. Make sure you have ALL your paper work done and in order well before you arrive at the borders. I knew more about importing my sled than the border guards!
I am gonna buy another sled this summer for my wife from the U.S. Well worth the few hoops you have to jump through in my opinion.
Cheers,
Rick.

I have some paperwork from customs saying no 72 hour wait and no duty. If you want to pm me your e-mail or a fax number I will give it to you. Would be a good idea to have it with you when bringing the sled back as bourder gaurds may not know as mulderdad says.

In my experience and with all of my buddies who have bought from the US, the 72 hour wait was required and customs insisted on this.
I'd check with your local border crossing, both US and Canada sides before trying to cross without the 72 hour pre-submission of paperwork.
I understand that it is the US side that requires the paperwork 72 hours ahead and I believe it was for checking title to ensure it was not stolen, liens, or otherwise.
The 72 hr wait is a must and you only need to talk with US customs about this. Canada customs has nothing to do with the 72 hr wait it is only for US customs so they can search the title. Whoever told you that you do not need 72hrs is wrong period . I have imported vehicles and sleds from the US and you must fax title 72hrs before crossing the border. When you get to Canada customs you will pay gst on the purchase price converted to canadian dollars > You will then have to pay 195 + gst to riv if your in ontario i think quebec is $205 to riv It is a very easy process if you have all your paperwork. If you dont have things done properly you will not cross.

Requirements for exporting a vehicle / car through a land border;
Question
Requirements for exporting a vehicle I car through a land border;
Answer .
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) regulations require the exporter of a vehicle to submit all export
documents to the port of entry from which the vehicle will be exported 72 hours prior to export.

--.t Email Answer
If the vehicle is titled in the U.S., the documents required are the original Certificate otTitle or a certified copy of
the original, and two complete copies of the original Certificate of Title or certified copy of the original. The vehicle
must be presented on the day of export at the appropriate port of entry for examination and verification of the
VIN. Please be aware that many land ports do not process cars for export on weekends. call ahead to make sure
your schedule will conform to the business hours of the port you will be exporting through.
This is only required for permanent exportations. If the car is being driven across the border for temporary
purposes - the driver is advised to have the registration available to present to CBP on request. These export
requirementsd do not apply to watercraft, jet skis or off-road recreational vehicles like snow-mobiles or dirt bikes.

Calling ahead and double checking would be a good idea, as well as writing down the name of the border offical you talked to. That was the reply my friend got from customs that he took with him to the boarder. He had no problems bringing back his sled without any notice given.

On the 72 hr wait, you are correct that it is for US customer to search the title. Without the 72 hours, they won't stamp the export documents. Without it stamped, you can still proceed to Canada (we were told we could proceed through), but Canada won't let you import without proof of the 72 hour title check and the stamped export documents.
I can't see how anyone could work around this, unless both border custom officers agree to waive the requirement, or if you can get the US border to stamp that the 72 hour title search has been completed (without it being done).
What you can do is get your dealer to send a copy of the title to the US border 72 hours prior to paying for and picking up the sled. Even though you don't actually own the sled, US Customs can (if you ask nicely and the dealer agrees) check the title to make sure it isn't stolen in advance.

At the crossing we went over,you could not fax the title to the U.S. customs office. They said it had to be hand delivered to them, for the 72 hr search. We made the best of it and had a mini vacation on the coast of Maine. Kids loved the ocean. Funniest part of the whole thing was the looks we got from people. Crazy canucks pulling a sled around the states in september! I argued with the border guards both on the phone and in person about the whole faxing the title thing. I told them it was total B/S that some border will allow the faxed title to do the search and some won't. Just be sure to call the border well ahead about the faxing of the title.

Rick.

Mine was hand delivered, but I had someone in the US do it for me.
