I'm having problems with my 03 Rx-1. Dealer says it has low compression because of carbon build up. Unable to get rid of carbon. Anyone have any suggestions? They are telling me that the compression ranged from 105 to 210. Sled has trouble idling and will backfire a little while idling. $900 plus parts for ring job. Don't have the $ to do that right now.

With that big of a difference in compression you cant ride it.
I guess as a last ditch effort you can try pouring some ring free down the cylinder and let it sit for a few days.
That may help free it up. but in my experience there is no "magic" fix for a ring problem.

Thanks for the reply. The dealer tried that already but I think I'm going to keep trying ring free or GM upper engine cleaner. Don't think it can hurt.

well i have something that might work better. try easyoff oven cleaner. you pour it in and let it sit for 30-40min. then fill the cylinders with penetrating oil and flush them out. make shure you get out as much as you can. check compression again. if it has come up, it should be fine as long as you do a flushing oil chage after a good heat cycle. if compression does not come up at all, you need to tear it down to do the rings.
got an old polaris running for a buddy this way. it ran great untill he smoked a tree with it 2 seasons later.

do a leak down test first to make sure it is carbon holding he rings in . It may be tight valves. That is what I had On two cylinders . To do a leak down test you basically put the piston on top dead center and then put compressed air in the cylinder and listen to were the air comes out comes out the exhaust it's the exhaust valve either tight or burnt . comes out the intake valve ,same thing as the exhaust ,comes out the crankcase bad rings or stuck in piston groove. good luck hope this helps.

Thanks guys, I hope something works. Sled has 8500 miles and I was hoping to get double that out of it.
