Hi All,
Picked up two used APEXs and love them. I have a 2009 and 2006 RTX. I picked up some Yamalube Oil for a whopping 9.99 a quart from the local dealer. Are there other oils that are cheaper that will meet same standards? I am not a heavy rider and plan to change oil every season.

Personally I use Mobil 1 full synthetic. It's not much cheaper then Yamaha's oil but I run it in my truck never had issues.
Someone else might be able to tell you something cheaper but if your changing oil once a year what's a $10 difference?

Always used the yama lube in mine didn't care about the cost, one suggestion see if there are any recalls or bulletins on the fuel lines, mine burnt last year and I found out afterward there was a bulletin out for them.
I've always used Mobil 1. Change it every year regardless of miles. It comes out looking as clean as it goes in.

I wait until the Mobil 1 0W40 goes on sale and buy it then, the Yamalube never does and we pay about $14 a liter for it up here! It's probably a little cheaper if you buy the oil change kit from the dealer and then you get the filter and plug seal too.

Not a ton of money. Its just more of a mental principal thing for me paying 10 bucks a quart of oil that's not even full synthetic.

How often are you changing the oil cartridge? I thought I read in the manual that's called for every 12,000 miles.

I change mine every year. I buy the Yamaha kit with 4 quarts of full synthetic, filter and drain plug washer. $50 plus shipping.

A lot of guys in our area use Amsoil. They have a 0W-40 oil meant for Yamaha 4 strokes. I figure it's cheap insurance to change the oil and filter every year.
Amsoil also has good chain case oil and grease - all synthetic products.

You have two now, buying by the case will save you a little as well. Good luck!

Obviously you have miles on to prove your system works, so nobody should have any reason to argue with you. But I do believe there are as many or more that have had as good of luck doing the maintenance as suggested by the manufacturer. The specified oil, and changing the filter annually. It's sort of a pain, but once done a couple times, it's not so bad. And a good reason to hang out in the garage during this tweener season.

for sure I enjoy tearing down my sled each off season but the fact that we only ride in snow (no dust in the air) leads me to belive that yamaha is correct on the service interval of the filter change so i will put that money twards more beer or some other worthwhile maintainace. some will say cheap insurance im sure and with the sled opend to that point why not as i make it at least down to the batery every season as i have found loose conections more then once after a full season of ridding but I think yamaha is correct on the service interval of the filter so i will trust them and hold off. now if my oil looks suspect when I change it I may just change my stance on this one but for now we will drink more beer and spend the time looking for other potential problems.

AMEN! I think I am going to have a beer tonight while doing oil changes and tunnel polishing! We hit 60 degrees up here today! Good weather for rolling them out into the driveway and doing some power washing!
