New defective XS 825

Snow sucks up here in upstate NY also. At least 5 more days before some colder weather hits. I am wearing the paint off my sled from waxing it! All of my riding buds including me are on suicide watch!
 
We all feel for ya! Sucks to be itching to go and Mother Nature won't be kind.
After a decent start, Mpls just had a major rain event the last few days and wiped out our snow cover. Good news is snow is great up in northern 1/3 of state where the same storm dumped 18-20" and it stayed cold so it's dialed in. I'm heading up there tomorrow for a week. Finally can do some testing.

Did all these defective ones come from shadetree? I just ordered one from Dennis Kirk...I gotta go look at the date on it???
 
If these start blowing it will be game over for the good reviews of Timken's XS825. I happen to know one guy who's already blown a new XS825 at 134 MPH. Was out of gear but still, it shouldn't be blowing.

When I was drag racing we set them up to go thru OD, run out of gear and pick revs about 50-100 foot before the finish line. I never blew belts ever.

Hey brother I hope all is well I just received 2 Ultimax 825 belts and I was wondering if there is a right way and a wrong way to install these.I remember my Yamaha belts for my Apex had an arrow pointing in the direction of travel.these don't have that arrow. Does it not matter ?Thanks brother
 
Technically, the XS belt is not directional. It can be installed in either direction. However, once installed and run, ALWAYS run it that same way.
If anyone has some time on their hands whiel they're waiting for snow, here's a couple links to look at. About 1/2 way through the 1st one, you can see how they mark/stamp the info (date code) referenced earlier in this thread. And, in the second one, the main Timken design engineer talks about how to break in a belt and some other interesting things about failure.
 
IMO, one thing we should be aware of and the Timken engineer alludes to it ... since the XS belt is a high-temp compound and is aggressive gripping the clutch faces, we MAY be able to reduce side pressure on the belt (because it grips so good) without it slipping. That would lower belt temps and make it live longer. To me, that might mean lower rated springs in either primary or secondary or both?
The engineer alludes to the fact that most failures occur because of high "hub" load (hub load is the total load/pull on the belt in the linear axis) and the subsequent heat generated, and/or high side pressure causing the top of the belt to "dish" which means become concave as we are looking at from the top. That can cause separation at the cord line in the belt.
When I'm testing this week, I'm gonna see if I can put any of this into action. Less side pressure (without slipping) if I can. I got 2000 miles out of my XS belt last year so maybe I'm good the way I am. Still gonna try and see if belt temps come down any (my belt temps are cool anyway), performance stays same (or gets better :).
 
My replacement came today and Tony was e-mailing me to make sure I received it this morning as well. Great service from Timken. Even got about 3" of snow. Not much but its a start.

Date code on the new one is 22-19. So 22nd week of 19. An older batch then the 30-19 that broke on me earlier.
 
Yes, but again Timken says there is no change in performance within 7 yrs of date of manufacture as long as the belt is not stored in direct sunlight. So, 22-19 is as good as 30-19, maybe even better IF 30-19 had problems. Brand new (say 1 month since manufacture) isn't necessarily better. We'd all hope no matter what date code they are, they're all the same. That's on Timken to do! Maybe the 22-19 batch is better?
I run XS827 (Cat) for the last 3 years and have never seen what you guys have posted in this thread. Always been the best belt I could find on my 280HP tuned Cat. Let's all hope Timken has a handle on this issue and gets it fixed (or already has).
