New phazer looking for advice.

2014 xtx phazer
Just picked up the xtx 14' with 200 miles on it. My top speed is about 55mph. I ride around 8500ft I noticed that the xtx has a 20 tooth top gear vs 18 in the mtn sled seems odd ? Looking at possible clutch kits are the Schmidt bros kits any good ? Gonna close up the tunnel and do clutch and gearing. Should I change helix or just do a primary kit? Thanks in advance
 

XTX is setup for sealevel from the factory and the 20 tooth gear is equivalent to a 18t on the short tracks due to the 8 tooth drivers like the MTX has. I'm at ~1700 ft and I've tried 17t, 18t, and 19t gears in mine and settled on 18t, it WILL pull the 18t to full overdrive at my altitude but it takes a good 1/2 mile + and runs 78 on GPS (85ish on the speedo). At 8500ft I'd run the 17t upper and change to lighter rivets in the fly weights to make sure you are running 11,000-11,500 rpm @ WOT. IF you can find one, I HIGHLY suggest the YVX secondary out of a 95-96 VMax (with reverse) and make sure to get the spacer the helix rides on. Its more durable, easy to adjust, and shifts better under load than the stock secondary clutch. 97+ trailing arm secondaries also work but need some machining to fit along with a custom spacer.

Thanks for the help. I'm ordering a 17 tooth to start with eventually I wanna get a clutch kit for it. Only one I can find is the Schmidt brothers.
 
Schmidt Brothers can set you up with a good kit. Give them a call and telling them where you ride, your weight, riding style and they will make something up for you. I did this with my Nytro and it was a completely different sled after I put the kit in it.
 
I'm guessing the lighter rivets are the 10.3 mm ones? Its hard to tell which rivets I actually have.
 
Had the 14 xtx nice machine, played with the clutches abit, got a kit from Schmidt Brothers and frankly in the end it did not work out for me with their kit, I ended up going back to the factory 19t top gear, SMB recommended 17t and then clutch for speed, their nut and bolt weights they advertise will not work on the phazer clutch causes binding, had to use heavier mod rivet weights in the end to get the revs down and their custom helix and comfort clutch spring, if I had to do it again I would have just purchased the helix and spring and keep the rest stock, these machines tend to hit the limiter to quick but some are better and faster than others, if you can get your xtx to hit 65 to 70 mph without over rev that would be about right, it will be snappy down low with those speeds.

I found SMB custom helix and low engagement spring to have the most benefit for my xtx, low engagement spring will help with your reverse problem and make your sled easier on fuel trail riding and not so jumpy, the custom helix I found gave you better midrange pull especially pulling up a long hill way quicker back shift. I believe the mtx has the 17t top gear, moving to a RTX 18t top gear you might see abit more top end, I think the chain in the chain case will accept up to a 19t top gear but with two inch lugs I wouldn't go higher then 18t top, the less rap around on the chain the more efficient your gearing becomes, this also is a gain.
 
It took me quite a while to get mine dialed in. I don't ever hit the rev limiter even on take off. But it took plenty of trial and error. My clutch set up listed in my signature. I almost went with a dual angle helix, but then I'd be starting over on my weights so I decided not to. I am 97% happy with my clutch set up LOL
 
65mph at 8,500 feet is probably all the motors go in it! I still find it impressive that a 500cc engine can turn a 144" track the way the Phazer does. Put a 144x2" on an old Indy 500 liquid (roughly the same HP) and it will struggle bad to get the track turning in powder. Just make sure your turning 11,800 MAX and 10,800 MIN and you will be in the power band. Mine runs 11,500 on hard pack and drops to 11,100 in powder with the YVX secondary. The stock secondly lost even more RPM between trail and powder.
