Hi, a general engine oil consumption for the experts..

After doing some riding with my Raptor 700, i found out that it burns some oil.
I was running for about 1.5 hours without any stops. Came home and found that it
had consumed 9 litres of fuel, and 0.3 litres of oil.

Could it be that the oil gets to thin for that kind of riding? (Street riding at about 55 mph average speed).
I was using a 10W40 fully syntethic oil. Should i go with a 15W40/ or 20W40 ?

The thing is I have not noticed any oil consumption earlier this season. Only after this long ride.

I also did a compression check today, which turned out good. (Just as the manual states.)

Do you have any suggestions?

i dont know if its related but i would use the 20-50 oil in the summer...

Dimebag.the ony true way to see if your oil rings are bad or a head gasket is to do a leak down test.I had a bad head gasket and oil was getting into the antifreeze and the compression was perfect.

I see.

There is no oil in the antifreeze. Neither is there any antifreeze in the oil.
Could it be the valve seals leaking on me? Or am i using to thin of a oil?

Do you mean there could still be damaged rings/piston even if the compression is spot on?

I don't think the oil is too thin too burn.

Yes you can have a bad oil ring and good compression. The upper ring is the compression ring.
It could be the valves too.

Ok,

So basically the compression test had no point for my problem.
It only shows that the compression ring is okay?

If I do a leakdown test, and the oil ring is damaged - i should get air coming from the crank case oil filler cap?

What about the valve seals? I have heard about problems with leaking valve seals on raptors before..
Air coming out air intake, or out exhaust muffler?

Ive never done a compression / leak down test before.. so there might be some stupid questions coming up..

Thanks ;)!

I ran yamalube 15w50 in 450R didn't take a single drop and gear shifting was a lot smoother just my 2cents.

Why is that?

Would you care to explain?

Thanks

Just a heavier weight for the summer heat, im sure there is going to be people that will disagree but thats just my opinion...

Did you ever try running a thinner oil? Did you see any oil consumption with a thinner oil?

Before 10 hour service I ran it with what ever oil that yamaha put in it, and efter that I switched to 15w50 and right away I noticed smooth gear shifting, and I didn't baby it ether and never took oil.

How does your airbox and filter look?Maybe the breather system ran some into airbox.

Airbox and filter looks good.

I was out riding for an hour today, with the 15W40 in it. No missing oil so far.

Ill keep watching the oil level carefully.

that is how it started on my rincon next thing you knew it was a quart of oil to a gal of gas. motor had to be bored out and new piston and rings installed no eason ever came up with it had work done by a reputable dealer and they didnt have a cause but has been good ever since. keep an eye on it mine started leaving a trail of blue smoke. hopefully it just got good and hot and it wont happen again. I would be sure to check oil level before any ride and periodiocaly during a long day.

The thicker oil will help but it shouldnt be using oil with the 10w40
