TY 4 Stroke Master
I took my 2017 BTX into the shop to thaw it out tonight. once the snow started melting off of it I noticed oil In the the snow. I investigated further and found the inside of the air box completely covered in oil. What would be the cause of this and what do I do to fix it.

seems that oil tank level is critical, as in do not over fill. any chance you got the sled laid over on it's side. these Yamahas will fill the air box with oil if rolled or laid on their side.

Never tipped it on its side but the oils is a bit over the full mark. I will take some out and see what happens. Thanks.

Is this from the oil going threw the pipe from oil separator into the air box?
Find it strange they would plumb the oil line from the separator into the air box/intake.

To be honest I’m not sure where it’s coming from. I just assumed it was coming from the oil tank vent. Where is the oil separator located

It’s for emissions, manufacturers can’t just vent crankcase fumes to the atmosphere anymore. And yes it does carry some oil into the air intake under normal conditions. If it’s enough to be dripping out that may be from being overfilled, tipped on its side or the separator might need cleaning. I believe there is instructions on cleaning it in the Viper frequently asked question section at the top of the SR Viper forumIs this from the oil going threw the pipe from oil separator into the air box?

Behind the muffler to the left (rear of sled) of the radiator cap. There will be 2 hoses on the top and one hose on the bottom of the separatorTo be honest I’m not sure where it’s coming from. I just assumed it was coming from the oil tank vent. Where is the oil separator located

More than likely the tank is spitting oil due to being overfilled. Very common complaint. Even when filled to the correct capacity they still tend to vent some oil out but it's nothing to worry about.

Thanks guys I will check it out. It is probably just from being over filled if they are that sensitive. It is just shy of 1/4” past the full. Did think they would be that sensitive.
Would it be acceptable to use brake clean to spray the inside of the sled under the air box to clean the oil out or are there parts in there the brake clean will damage.

MPI did a nice article on filling oil. I add oil after draining to half way up sight plug or on dipstick sleds halfway between marks and after fully warming and letting it sit about a minutes check and add it again to halfway on sightglass or just below full on dipstick.

NOTES ABOUT READING OIL LEVEL:
• Correct procedure for reading oil level.
• Level is always read by screwing the cap all the way in, then removed.
• Start with a cool vehicle on flat / level ground.
• Start vehicle and warm up for a few minutes (manual says till fan comes on). Typically once water has reached 150+deg F it is warm and variances from temp are gone.
• Shut motor off.
• Wait at least 30 sec, but no more than 90 sec to read oil level.
• Huge oil level reading variations have been observed. They are TIME & TEMPERATURE dependent.
• Highest level observed on warm motor with-in 60sec of shut-down.
• Level drops 60cc within 1 minute of above condition (would cause over-fill if customer used this reading).
• Lowest level observed on cold motor after only 30sec of run time (would cause 235cc over-fill).
• Oil level on cold motor and no run time is a little low (would cause 150cc over-fill)
• Reading oil level without screwing dip stick all the way in causes about 175cc over-fill in addition to above conditions.

Very common problem, if you run wide open across lakes or a long grade, lower the oil in tank to lower half of site glass

I’m surprised no one has made a catch can to vent the separator into, instead of the airbox.
