I noticed the underside of my oil tank is a little slick. Didn’t see it when it was apart this past summer but i ran the engine two weeks ago and it seems to be wet now - no drips on the floor (yet)

So here is the question- what have others experienced- should I keep an eye on it over the season or rip it apart now and re seal. Do they typically stabilize or just get worse?

This one is on me. I resealed it 2 summers ago and thought it was done properly- guess not.

The machine screws holding the tank to the chaincase cover needed a bit of tightening. So I have done that, but still is wet…

Any insight is welcome.

I took the gasket route from BOP. Have not had an issue since. I would think you should address it now, better to be safe than have a problem while out riding. Just my .02

It's not going to stop , have a Sidewinder and now a King Cat also , never had the Wonder leak until I started not letting in on

Pull it apart and seal it or get bop gasket !!! Last year I got a Winder in the had a small fire by the muffler from a oil tank leak. He caught it early with minimal damage but it could have easily went up in flames..
His sled is 100% stock

It's absolutely ridiculous that Yamaha hasn't done something about this oil leak problem. This ROV is supposed to keep the oil from running out of the engine but instead it causes the oil to run out the bottom of the oil tank...nothing has been solved by Yamaha to prevent the problem, if fires are happening then it's a real problem besides just getting stuck.
Why hasn't Yamaha issued an advisory to get a gasket or produced one that works. This oil leaking problem just isn't going to go away by itself and Yamaha better come up with an answer because we're getting tired of this problem...I'm tired of oil under my sled in the garage and on the truck bed. IT'S TIME FOR A FIX YAMAHA!!! It's the only thing that sucks about this sled otherwise it's an awesome machine. Joe

Like I said, BOP has the fix. Yamaha not so much!!!! Lol

I have the infamous oil leak as well. I did get BOP gasket to fix. Does anyone know if you can remove the cover and install the gasket without removing the muffler? Looks like you can, but bottom belly pan may be an issue. Thanks.

UNTIL you get rid of the ROV you will have oil leaks period.. Delete the POS.. This issue has been discussed for years on here.. Yamaha will not change it.. Its a emissions thing.. They put a heated ROV on.. Its not the answer.. Get rid of the ROV guys..

I've seen more than one oil tank with this problem. The 2 screws that hold that 90 deg elbow on the bottom of the tank are too long (they go into a blind hole). They bottom in the holes before they are tight. The elbow has an o-ring that seals it into tank. If screws don't tighten, there isn't enough compression on the o-ring so it will seep a little. Possible solutions: a) pull one screw out at time and grind them shorter (approx 1/8") and re-install; b) take one screw out at a time and add a small washer to screw then re-install. The obvious reason to only pull one at a time is then you don't have to drain oil tank.
Check to see if this is problem with yours.

Pretty sure its not the elbow, but i will give it a look.

Have bypassed the ROV since day one so its not because of that.

I used a permatex product - all black. Prepped the surfaces well, and followed the instructions. If i were to do it again - would used lock tight on the screws holding the tank to the chain case cover. Also, i applied a good bead, tightened the screws, waited an hour to apply final tighten. I think i should have just tightened them right from the start.

So got my sled back from the dealer last week, while at dealer I was told that if the oil tank leaks that Yamaha will fix it as it's a known problem...good enough but last year when I took my sled to the dealer it took 11 weeks to get my sled back..they just couldn't seal the tank. I did tell them to take their time because the season was over.
Went to Tug Hill area in NYto have new skis put on, 6" of fresh snow fell and I got a chance to take a short ride and test out the new skis. I loaded up the sled and when I got home I noticed oil again in the truck bed..not looking forward to opening the cowling and look for the oil leak and checking the oil tank. The oil leaks have been there since I bought this sled brand new. I do have a BOP oil tank gasket but haven't put it on. The dealer advised me not to do any aftermarket fixes on my sled because it might void my warranty..so feeling like between a rock and a hard place...not good. This is why I ask Yamaha to come out and advise us of the fix so the warranty doesn't get voided.

A gasket on the oil tank won’t void warranty!!! If it does, please find another dealer!

Shouldn’t void warranty on a BOP gasket, it will stop leak follow BOPs install directions and your good.
