- Hi all,

- I currently run an 06 Apex that is ridden 100% of the time on trails.

- I've been thinking of upgrading, and I still love the Apex, but an 08 40th Nytro R-TX has come to my attention, and I want some opinions of what you think.

- I rode one last year, but it wasn't set up for me, and it was for only 10mins at a demo ride, so I didn't get a true taste.

- Would I like the Nytro riding trails?
- WIth 3000kms, what should I be looking for on it?
- Were there any issues with the 08's?

- All help is greatly appreciated!

Worn out sliders, bent subframe and exhaust donuts (they tend to dissapear). Also check for free-play in the steering/skis. The plastic bushings wear out fast. Oilite bushings is the way to go, and can be purchased from our forum sponsors.

The 08 subframes are weak, and a slight hit from a rock will bend it. Look for rust in the welds on the subframe.

There are many things people like to complain of about the 08's, but i dont think you will be dissapointed.

I own a sled exactly like the one your talking about, and I could'nt be happier. I have a mod-fever which I've had since the day i got this sled.

Good luck on your decision.

- Thanks Dimebag
- I heard about bent frames, but wasn't sure what year they were.

- As for the "slight" hit from a rock comment, I assume you mean a large rock??

- I could ask the same questions about the Apex in the "Apex Forum" and I'll get goods and bad for them too.

- I guess what I'm looking for is ride style, and just how different it is from my lovely Apex.

- Like I said, I'm purely a Trail rider (with a few lakes) and will never go off trail in my part of the world.

- Thanks again!

No, actually the frames are really weak. The 09 and newer Nytros has a new style frame that is a bit better, but they still bend quite easy.

I would not worry about it. I hit a rock this winter and am going to replace the frame as soon as i get a new one in the mail.

I can't comment about how this sled will fit your riding style. I bought mine in 09 with the intension of extending it and use it as a crossover/ mountain sled. Back then it was much money saved compared to getting a brand new xtx.

Im sure someone will chime in on this..

Bent mine within 200 miles, brother in law was the same. No warranty in 08 for bent frames ofcourse we were the "first" to have the problem. Bent frame makes an already twitch unpredictable sled even worse.

If your a 100% trail rider the nytro may not be for you. If you like to go from sitting position to standing alot then it's a great sled. Also if you like to do a combination of riding ie trail, boondocking, ditch banging then the nytro is your ride. I have a 2010xtx and do mostly trail riding but I have always liked to sit and stand while I ride so the nytro is great for that. I bought mine used with 1800 miles and it had the orginal sliders on it. I have only demo a apex from time to time and the power difference between the nytro and apex is like night and day dont get me wrong the nytro has plenty of torque and hp but if Yamaha would put a apex motor in the nytro WOW!!!

- That's what I'm wondering...I've always rode sitting down.

- It drives me crazy when I see those guys with the big risers, standing up going down the trail!

- If you wanna ride snow cross, then do it.
- Don't be a wannabe on the trails.

- As for the frame, it sounds like the 08's were the worst of the bunch??

- Maybe I should jus hold out for a 40th Apex??

I have had a couple Apes's and have had Nytro thought's at times but after riding the two back to back each time i still come back to an Apex for trail comfort and the four cyl.

sit down riding- Apex, Standing- Nytro. My dad has an attak so i ride both. Tough to ride my nytro all day like i can ride the apex. cruising that is. Bumpy trails im riding the nytro for sure.

if you like going from corner to corner fast,,, buy a Nytro man

If I rode 100% trails I'd have an Apex for sure. In my personal opinion the Apex is a better trail sled then the Nytro.

I think it should come down to what kind of trails you'll primarily be riding. If the trails are narrow and twisty, go for a Nytro, if they are wide and fast, then the Apex is for you.

I can ride my Nytro all day on the trails, it is a comfortable sled, especially if you have longer legs.

Definitely look at the subframe of the Nytro though, if it's not bent, then weld in some gussets to strengthen it. You'd be surprised at how little of a jolt it'll take to bend it.

Also, get some new skis for it. I've tried C&As, Slydogs, Skidoo Pilots and have not settled on Kimpex Arrows, best ski for the trails.

Monte...not eveyone who rides standing up is a " wannabe sno Xer "....Standup riding is very comfortable at times. Like you I am a 100% flatland trail rider, I have no use for venturing off trail and I was always sitting down. The last few years on my F7 I started to stand up more and now that I have my Nytro I am about 60% seated and 40% standing....and my back thanks me for it. You can cruise all day seated on a Nytro if you want, it's a very comfortable sled but when it gets a bit rougher..or you just need to stand up it's a very easy transition and the sled is very easy to handle. It's a great sled and very comfy if you want to do 200 mile days ( just need to be aware of gas stops...no 120 miles between fill ups ).

The weak subframe thing is a completely overblown internet phenomenon. The newer subframes are reinforced but damage is due to people hitting things and not being completely truthful as to how fast they were going, how little snow they were riding in, or how hard they hit something.

The Apex is a better handling sled and is more comfortable for long distance riding as long as the trails are not too rough. Reason I think the Deltabox chassis is more comfortable is because you can put your feet forward, back or right under you. On the Nytro you can't put your feet out front. For me, on a long glacier ride that is in smooth, untracked powder, I noticed I wanted to stretch out my legs. Really similar to what you'd experience on a long street bike ride.
