I know I'm in the wrong category but it's the same motor so maybe you guys can help. When I started my '03 Mountain yesterday to go for a small ride she started, warmed up and worked fine as I drove her to the shed. After putting gas in her I idled down the driveway and when I crossed the road and started giving her throttle she just moaned out and just like gragled or something, it was scary for me because I thought she was dying. I shot her throttle a few times and it kept happening so I stopped and idled for like 10 seconds then everything was perfect again. Any ideas of what happened here?

It's not the same as that. I had her out in a load of rain once and when it dropped off cold the TORS froze on the throttle and when I tried to move she would just engage and sputter and backfire. Took me a while to finally find out what was causing that. But this was way different than the TORS. Also does about 100-120km to half a tank of gas sound right? Say that your driving at 130 to 150 km/h the whole time.

Sounds like bad gas or water in the gas. I'd throw some gas line antifreeze in the tank and see what happens.

Well, you're getting half the mileage you should get unless you're in a foot of powder all day. So you are running very rich. Sounds like a fuel/carb issue. I would make sure the air box is clear and attached to all the carbs properly, and all cables and linkages working properly with the carbs. If good never hurts to run fuel/carb cleaner in the gas for a tank. Check plugs for wetness, and clean coil plug connectors. After that, I go to the shop as had no luck taking the carbs apart myself.

Your fuel mileage sounds about right, 120km (75 miles) to half a tank (5 gallons) is about 15mpg for us English folks (assuming you have a 10 gallon tank).

How do the spark plugs looks, are they dark black? wet? fouled?

It sounds like it's loading up with fuel when at low rpm's which could be bad carburetor settings (fuel bowl level, slide clip setting, fuel screw, etc...), faulty ignition coils, dirty air filter, etc...

Might as well start with the plugs and air filter, then go to coils and carb settings. Also check the "choke" to make sure it's not sticking open.

Sorry, I misread your post and thought you said you got 100-120 km on a full tank of gas. Your mileage is bang on for half a tank.

Ok that's good to hear about the mileage. I checked one of the plugs one day and it was perfect but I'll check all four when I get her in the shed tomorrow to tighten the track hopefully, if Dad remembers to light the fire while I'm in school. I'm sure the air filter is good, I took that off myself when I changed the oil and I always double check to make sure everything is hooke up right. My guess is there was water in the line and stopped the flow of gas for a bit but when I let her idle for a few it melted out?? Ever since I had her to the shop the year to get the carbs cleaned she has been working funny, doesn't seem like I can get the same top end or anything. I used to be able to do 170 km/h no problem for 3 quarter throttle but now I'm lucky if she's doing 150.

Couple of years ago i parked my sled in the garage for about a week(during that week the temps go really mild then chopped of to freeze). When i started the sled up it ran but backfired and took full trottle to make it move.Changed the plugs and added Yamaha fuel conditioner which fixed it.Water from condensation causes alot of problems.

The gas station in Jackson's Arm is closed for a few weeks for some reason so now we have to get gas in Pollard's Point and everyone in the three comunnities here complain about water in PP gas. It could be the water but she has been acting funny all year since the dealer cleaned my carbs for pre-season maintenance. Brought her back in caz she is acting funny and they cudn't find anything wrong with the job they done, says both times there was no dirt in the carbs. I'm thinking they done a cheap a$$ job cleaning the carbs and theres dirt in them. I'm afraid to clean them myself because the only time dad ever lost the motor in his '92 venture LT was the winter before last and that was when he got some other guy to clean his carbs.
