Yep and I have been warned about this upcoming season. Seems like the warden’s central office for our area, invited some people in the know, concerning how to distinguish modded exhaust and or aftermarket exhaust. They do realize that many are trying their best to cover up the non stock mufflers, and without a tear down on some a DB test may be added in the future for those!
They are lurking on this site, be careful what pics and things you post concerning, because your name is all over this site and is quite easy to share, if you get my drift!

For some reason i don't trust the sm tunes, they seem to be on the hairy edge and produce too much heat, do they play with the air fuel mixture to make this safe?wanted to purchase one but was talked out of it,maybe you can tell me otherwise, how long have you had it and how does it run?I'm stevewithOCD!

Hey I can tell you from personal experience that the sm tunes run flawless!!! Sm tune bundle 225 240 270 was the first tunes installed on my brand new 998 with 0 km (2019).For some reason i don't trust the sm tunes, they seem to be on the hairy edge and produce too much heat, do they play with the air fuel mixture to make this safe?wanted to purchase one but was talked out of it,maybe you can tell me otherwise, how long have you had it and how does it run?
I ran this crap out of it mostly on 270 and 0 issues!!
I took my dad out(he raced back in early 80's ) to try my sled. I put it on the 270 setting and let him have it..
Well I started getting nervous because all he did was hold it to the bar from one end of the lake to the other!! He must have did 10 to 15 run full out! I remember thinking to my self "oh well he is 75 if he blows it I'll deal with it...lol
And there was 0 issues then I upgraded to the PERFORMANCE muffler bundle and run another hard 1500km 80% at 300hp and 0 issues
I had video of him running lake but havent been able to post pics or video on ty for a long time.

Reminds me of a conversation with my dealer that I posted on here after picking up my 2017 Sidewinder.
He had told me that he had been in contact with multiple shops, and flashes for stock mufflers would be coming out to allow up to 238 hp or so, but it will take a while before they refine them, but for now mss or aftermarket is the only way to add hp easily. Many responded with a bit of negativity towards that comment. Stock muffler too restrictive, stock muffler will run too hot etc. etc. It took about 1.5 seasons, and many asking the aftermarket guys for a stock muffler tune. Now we are at 260-270. SM tune with header sounds very intriguing to some now!, mo power with lesser octane fuel is all the talk for the sm tunes.
3 seasons with my Sidewinder and 0 Safety Checks or stops by the Department Of Inland Fisheries and Game. That is the State O Maine department that registers sleds and also employs the wardens (by the way).
Have seen them on the trail setting up or on adjacent trail, or too busy because they had an entire group pulled over, but I haven’t had to stop and talk myself.
If riding in Maine it better be a stock muffler or have a back up plan for when it happens, because it could ruin a week or two of riding for those who travel from away to ride here, and many do, especially toward the end of the season!
FYI: some of those county trails are still too big for even a Winder. You must let up every once in a while ,you know?

I’ve also heard some negative comments around the larger hp SM tunes. That they create too much heat and could have long term negative effects. Precision EFI does not produce one higher than Stage1 30hp in a SM. I like the idea of the SM tunes for both sound level and cost savings of not needing the aftermarket exhaust. But also worry about some of the negative comments. I not heard anything negative though from anyone running the 270 SM tunes.

Ill be honest...I haven’t heard or seen anybody unhappy with their SM Tunes from any Vendor! I don’t know where this negative talk idea is coming from? Maybe before they were released, there was some concern from some, but after a year on the snow, these have been Absolutely superb.
And after installing mine, and taking the foam out from underneath the muffler...mine seems cooler than stock. When I ran the stock tune the first year, I could really feel my right boot heating up from the heat of the muffler. Last year, after removing the foam and installing the SM Tunes...zero heat on my right boot. So go figure?? Was it the foam holding more heat in there? Could have been?? No issues whatsoever.
Do yourself a favor, if you’re on the fense about SM Tunes..don’t be. It’s all good and All GO!

I think the concern is the back pressure and heat of the stock muffler flow effecting exhaust valve/ valve seat life long term.
