Waiting for snow to try our new closed loop tunes on our winders here in midwestern Ontario. Fresh shocks all round and even more power and fuel economy this year so we are chomping at the bit for snow. We have got sleds dialled in except for primary roller life, in particular my sons on max spool 17 with a 1.75” paddle is really hard on rollers. Sled has 18,500 kms on this tune being ridden really hard and biggest issue is primary roller wear, it destroys them. We keep 6 new thunder products ones on the shelf ahead so we dont have downtime waiting. Can somebody chime in if they have any alternatives or bushings we could put in our collection of pounded out ones?
thanks in advance and have a good holiday season

You have only two choices to keep rollers in it.
1. A different clutch
2. A different clutch
The only way my buddy and I were able to keep rollers in them was to go to the old sty clutch on them. I put on a RX-1 primary I had on the shelf, and my buddy put on an old Apex primary. He was eating rollers every few days, I was only going 300-600 miles, the smaller tunes I could go 1200 miles is all. Now the roller issue is in the rearview, but the old clutches still rattle, even more so, but at least it will last.
Lots of guys also going to the TAPP primary and have a nice quiet primary and no more roller issues as well. If I was going aftermarket it would be the TAPP hands down.
You can forget about trying to make rollers last in the Winder primary on the big tunes, it won't happen, at least I have not seen it yet, I don't care what brand or size rollers you put in it, they just don't last any length of time IMO.

Have you checked the clutch weight bushings and clutch bushings?Waiting for snow to try our new closed loop tunes on our winders here in midwestern Ontario. Clutch roller life depends on clutch kits with the Sidewinder primary.
Our customers that are running our clutch kits are not having all these roller issues.

no issues with rollers in 2300 miles at 270hp, kept a close eye on them because I was waiting for them to fail. Fully disassembled clutch this summer and inspected them very closely and they were perfect. I bumped it up to 290hp so maybe that will change now.

Thanks for input, I wasnt dissing our thunder products rollers they for sure held up better than stock ones did. Aftermarket solution like tapp seems like a big pill to swallow moneywise. Our clutches seem to be really tight so I dont understand how they chew up rollers so much worse than others. I do recall Knapp mentioning the flyweight pin is locked in older style clutches but not the newer winder style? Was there also mention of the whole clutch being built cheaper? I will start looking for a low mile apex clutch, fair number of dismantler guys here in Ontario.

Yep same here, have heard so much about failing primary rollers, plus the fact that these primaries are super loud, that I check mine after every ride, just to find that my rollers are still OK. So after over 7K on my stock rollers, I decided to change the bushing to the yellow/greenish Yamaha bushings that others had tried on this site!
My bud who has almost double my mileage, and has had problems with his bushings, and has tried multiple after market bushings, and also larger rollers, warned me that I should keep my originals handy! So I kept them rather then throwing them away. I have been Stock for 1400 miles, Ecotrail tune for 1500 miles or so, and Max Spool 16 for remainder of mileage.
The trails that I ride, are mostly 1/4 to 1/2 mile straights, with occasional maybe, 1/2 to 1 mile straight aways!
I know that if I rode more of those Maine County trails, with their miles and miles of RR beds, and incredibly fast, fields and power line trail system, my primary rollers would have been melted miles ago.
Hoping this newer fiber style bushing works out as good as my original plastics.

I have found the Secondary spring tension is directly related to bushing life . I have used duralon bushing with 14.5 mm rollars from the 2000 srx wear pretty good after you loctite bushing in place so there is little chance of bushing moving in roller .

I just picked up a set of the G Force 15mm rollers. They sure look more stout than any I've used so far. They are wider than the stock rollers and come with new washers.
