Anyone else had the PTO seal on their apex leak? Mine only seems to leak when I lay it over on the left side, not when its running. But it sure pours out when on its left side! Yammy doesn't show a seal, just a complete countershaft assembly! A little info on what others have done? I find it hard to believe that people are changing a 600 dollar shaft if they blow a belt and tear up a seal.....I didn't even blow a belt, the seal just leaks when the sleds on its side! And it only has 1600km's on it!!! Any tips would be appreciated!

I am pretty sure that is just your crank case vent hose leaking oil when laid on your left side.

My guess as well.
If the seal is leaking, you can check it by spraying wd40 at it lightly while running, The engine should speed up, but it would run like crap if it was leaking at all.

seal

No, it is definetly the seal leaking, I can see it when I tilt sled on its side. And as far as spraying wd40, that won't work on a four-stroke, the crankcase isn't pressurized like a 2 stroke, so the seal leaking will have no effect on the running of the engine, other than an oil leak when I roll it :4STroke:

my brother blew one last year. you cannot buy the seal alone, only an entire assembly, as you have said. in Canada, they're like $1000 or something.

somehow, the dealer found a seal out of something else that fit and has worked for a couple of seasons. It was like a $2.50 fix... I can't recall what the seal was out of though.... :o| it was something dumb, like a Kodiak? Don't know how they ever figured that one out....

If I can get the details, I'll post them up here for you.....

ooppps..sorry me bad...lost in the 2 stroke days ! LOL
You mean there is no seal to replace in there?
Give us the year of the sled, whatever you can, I will make a few calls and see what I can find out for you, reliable sources.

seal

WarriorBeads, that would be great if you could find out what seal is the same! What a stupid idea to not have the seal listed seperately!
Details I have are:
2007 Yamaha APEX Mountain SE
SEAL number that I can see is NOK 23430
Other number i found on this site is NOK AH2343Q

Thanks

if you go to a store that sells ballbarings they have seals in all dimensjons, you just need to measure the old one. did it on my rx1, no problems at all.
the numbers on the seal is the outside dim X inside dim X thickness all in millimeters.

according to my brother, he believes it was a crank seal off of either an srx or sxr. hope this helps.

PS - sounds like the cost to replace the entire assembly also involves splitting the motor, which I don't think your $600 took into consideration

Good LUCK!

I got the seal for my RX for about $7 from Port Yamaha when my belt blew and ground up the seal - easy fix, but I think that it is a different setup on the Apex. Give Kevin at Port a call or PM him and I would bet that he would have some good advice.

The last one we replaced for a customer I believe we had to go back to the RX-1 motor I believe this is the part number 93102-40009-00 I may have one in stock I will check tomorow. Give us a call
Thanks Mick

Finally, found seal! APEX PTO

Seal finally found...........
Dimensions are:
40mmX52X8mm this size is hard to source
I ended up finding 40X52X7
Bearing and Transmission here in Canada just uses a seal number of:
40X52X7
SKF seal number 15801 OR 15808
It is a double lip seal, the one I found locally is only single lip, but seems to be working. I'll update after the trip this weekend.

Just wondering, that seal, behind that is actually a bearing I think, and has a seal on one side, similar to a bottom chaincase driveshaft bearing, no? I have no pic, but fromwhat I have been told, that seal you lost is almost like a dustcover, brotecting the inner bearing and seal, no?
If so, then having the seal you are using will pose no real problem.Wish I had a pic of the assembly. Hope it works!

seal

The seal definetly holds oil back, it is a double lip oil seal. The seal I found was on single lip, but it was 7mm and I actually fit 2 of them in.....so I guess I have double lip now ;) Been working fine now for approx 300km's........keeping my fingers crossed.
