I realize there are many posts on this, but each one has different starting points, making the hotel info a little sketchy as you make your way around. Love any advice, as this is our first time taking the RAP tour. We're looking to go Feb 15-17 (praying for more snow!).

Looking for recommendations/feasbility for this route (starting off RAP aroundHuntsville going clockwise):

Friday AM:
Start: Deerhurst (Huntsville)
Friday Night: Pembroke (350km - longest - w/o lake crossings) - Hotel recos?
Saturday: Pembroke to North Bay (280km) - Hotel Recos? Is the trail north of Algonquin (A112A) better than the bordering trail (Top A)
Sunday: North Bay back to Huntsville ~235km (with a little detour from North Bay through Bonfield)

Thoughts on this route? Any tricky spots for fuel?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

better come to Sudbury cause they don't have any snow...

I would do Sudbury to Timmins then to Attatibi Canyon back to Sudbury...

or Stay in Sudbury...1,400 km of trails here with some great loops...we did 575km's in 2 days here and conditions are great...here are 2 great loops http://www.sudburytrailplan.on.ca/trails/self.php

GOOGLE MAPS TRAILS

Real time groomer location...shhh don't tell anyone ;-) http://share.findmespot.com/shared/faces/viewspots.jsp?glId=0qIOqWqYfMncPh5IFYU3EcSEMd1062UX3

and Stay at the Sportsman's Lodge

X2 on Daranello post,
Drive a little more north and have a lot more fun,
Trails around RAP are barely rideable (all ice) but nothing like Sudbury, there's good snow up there now, go north or west or both from Sudbury and you will have a good time,
It doesn't look good this year south of Sudbury...

Trails in sudbury area are excellent at this point.

FWIW, the northbay area is tricky if your on nippissing at night, locals like to run over lake pegs with their trucks, making finding the trail impossible (please, ask me how I know this...) Also, general lack of snow in the french river area.

Accomodations in NB are very good north of the lake, your simply cross the road fromt he shore of the lake to find Best Western and several others, all ususally packed full, so book ahead!

From reading freedomsledder and ontarioconditions, I would also say head north to Sudbury or even further.

I always have a hard time finding accomadations in the Sudbury area, I do know of chatue guy the motel next door to it and the sportsman but is there any other places to stay and park so that we can ride out of ( I'd rather not trailer to Chelmsford ) in the morning and then back to Sudbury. Any suggestions would be great thanks...

Sportsman Lodge or Pine Falls Lodge are outta town, and right on the groomed trails! Gas and Food on site too!

Sportsman has 300-400 sleds on any given Saturday/Sunday, and I'm sure Pine Falls does too, but Pine Falls has smaller gas tanks on site, so he doesn't see the traffic.

Both good spots, but like I said...outta town.

Chateau Guay and the Moonlight Motel are beside each other and the trail runs right to their parking lot.
Just a heads up...lotsa "city" traffic with the motels and the trails can get beat up by the end of the day.
But city amenities are close.

The Cartier and Chinigughi loops look pretty fun. How many km's are those loops? I looked at the link but didn't see a mileage listed.

Thanks for all the tips!!!

Have to make a game time decision (which will not likely be easy since its family day weekend)...snow's in the forecast for much of the RAP and Sudbury - North.

thanks again, and keep the updates coming....really want to do the RAP this year, but may have to wait til next year.

Definitely could be challenging to find accomodations....

Ok, for you Sudbury and North people: If we get up to Sudbury and want a 3 day trip, suggestions? seems ambitious to get to Cochrane and back in 3 days, no?

I've heard some things about Abitibi Canyon, worth the trek? where is it?

Thanks for all the help guys!
