I know this subject was probably beaten to death!!
but I've been searching around looking for info with no success!! When draining the chaincase oil you just loosen the 11 screws and pull the outer case away from the case it self or do you need to drain the motor oil and remove the cover completely? If you just pull the cover partially and let it drain wouldn't the shavings get between the two matting surfaces and cause a leak? And how would you check the gasket if you don't have it completely apart?
sorry for the viper newbie question

I found it easier to pull the oil cover off and then the chaincase, but that is just me.
If you take the oil tank off separate you then have to reseal it to the cover. It's easier to just remove the hoses and take whole thing out as a unit.
Yamamarc with that low of miles I would just use a evacuator and suck the oil out. 3000 mi for sure needs to be inspected.

Marc be extra careful tightening the screws when putting it back together. just snug all of them first and go back and tighten them, they can break the tabs rather easily.

that's what I was wondering!!! With the low miles my wife and I have on our sleds I was just doing a chaincase oil change. I wasn't planning on doing a complete inspection of the gears, bearings and chain yet! Evacuator seems like a better way then to drain the oil then by separating the chain case cover thanks! If you take the oil tank off separate you then have to reseal it to the cover. Hey Hammer when I did the chaincase oil for the first time on wife I did pull the cover but it was a waste of time on my sled I pumped out the old stuff and added! My next chain case oil change I will remove the covers for sure since we will have 5000km on our sleds!Yamamarc what did you end up doing I am in the same situation and wondering what you did
thanks Hammer
If you have low kms just pump it out and add new and do a chain adjustment the next time you change it out you may want to remove it for a inspection

I used a small marine oil extractor my buddy did his with a cheap manual pump style they both worked! Your hand held mityvac should work fine as long as the hose is small enough to fish down to the bottom!ya I have low Kms just 800, doing my first oil change so wanted to do chain case oil to. what did you suck it out with a hand held mityvac
