I tip my hat to all the sledders who were prepared for such a thing(shovels, beacons, probes, etc. )...good job...
the government of B.C.owns the land..so are they not responcible for the people..we are not aloud to do this in quebec..if we are stopped on as you guys say crown land..they can give us a ticket..ATVs and Sleds..must ride on trails only..sure we ride elsewhere..but theres always one cop who is a pain in your wallet.....B.C. should have just said no turbo area its too dangerous..they closed it Sunday..we as sledders would not call it off....the more snow is better,thery...they close places in the states for wildlife..and if you get caught there its a ticket..then why not close a place cause people might have to be rescued..ski hills close out of bounds skiing when its too risky...people sound more important to me than the wildlife..but..even with the rules and laws..people will still be people....just like us on trails...How Fast Is It Again...Is this the end for Yammie fest too ?87gtNOS said:quebecmoutainrider said:pray for everyone..this could end the shoot out...it is not an event reconised by the B C government...this is a sad day for sledders...
Where do you draw the line at 'event', 'gathering', 'sancioned', etc??
Everyone goes there at this time of year and it's nicknamed 'Big Iron Shootout'. Why does it need a license? etc....
Condolences to those involved.....
I tip my hat to all the sledders who were prepared for such a thing(shovels, beacons, probes, etc. )...good job...

It's s**t like this that's gonna get the backcountry shut down or over-regulated in BC, too.
The calls to ban snowmobiling are already out, from the usual tree-hugger crowd saying that we're nothing but a bunch of selfish, polluting, drunken redneck yahoos...
There was an avalanche warning issued but 200 people decided to ignore it. Sad that people died, but that said it could have been a hell of a lot worse. Now the rest of us have to deal with the political fallout.
Want to get pissed off at the level of ignorance out there? Read the comments on these stories:

This is the mindset that we're up against in BC.

Meanwhile, B.C Solicitor General Kash Heed said new rules are coming to further regulate the use of the backcountry. Heed said the deaths and injuries on the weekend might have been prevented with stricter supervision.

You guys have no clue, there has been years with 3000 sleds at the event. BIS 2006 was HUGE.
Very bad that the deaths occured, terrible that they went up anyway with conditions the way they were, and fortunate that 200 didnt die.

What info that hasnt been posted alot. 2010 BIS was suppose to be a 2 day event. Turbo hill was suppose to happen on sunday. People just went there on there own, Ozone Dave wasnt even there. There is talk of the Govt/Police to lay charges. It was bad deal all around, cant image how the guy feels that went above the guy that was stuck. It sure could of been worse, like Ken said, 3000+ people couple times. All the people doing the self rescue did an amazing job. It could have been 50 dead. Best wishes to the familes that lost those men.

Re: FALLOUT: Avalanche-Turbo March 13,2010

I'm sure to get roasted for this.......
From the Globe & Mail
In wake of avalanche tragedy, the search is on for 'Ozone Dave' - The Globe and Mail
"The local Snowmobile Revelstoke Society distanced itself from the Big Iron Shootout yesterday, calling it "renegade" and "underground."
"I don't know when they're coming. I don't know anything about it," said Angela Threatful, executive director of the society. "I don't know who the organizers are."
Interesting and somewhat misleading statement. BTW, what happened to all the posts from "SRS" or "Powder Puff" on this board leading up to the days prior to the event? The posts reffering to the increase in price of trail passes and the policy regarding maximum capacity for the days of said event. I can understand the club distancing themselves from this fiasco in regards to liability issues, but to make untruthful statements to the media cause me some concern.

It was very good to see all the people using there probes, shovels, beacons to find the missing people. But know of them could tell its a bad place to be? It just snow for 2 days on top of ice, then its nice & sunning out. Its typically when avy's happen. I seen on the news, RCMP looking for Dave now. He doesnt charge anybody $ to be in the non sanction event. Its your call to show up. Didnt know that Revy snow club said oh we didnt know they were coming. Come on, why did the trail pass jump to 25 for 1day. In the long run, govt is likely going to make riding in the mountains need some sort lic like boats are now. Or close access down to the major part of the public. Force anybody to take avy training & have the proper gear.

Very true Red. The simple fact is people thumbed their noses at the warnings, and took their lives in their hands.
I saw the conditions, and stayed home. A few years ago I likely would have been a sheep, and just plowed on like everyone else, but no longer.

Too bad many are acting like this is the first time avy rescues were ever necessary....
If the experts are so good at predicting avy likelyhoods, then should'nt we get this upset over ALL human involved avelanches whether caused by hikers, skiers, heli-skiers etc. or are the non-motorized sports held to a lesser standard of awareness?
I think the ppl that were there were very much prepared for the worse, and they saved many lives with quick action and the equipment they were bright enough to have on hand along with rescue training many of them probably went through incase of just this type of occurance.
