My '05 RX-1 with 15,000 km is getting noisy at an idle. I believe the noise is coming from the reduction gears between the crank and output shafts. I have done the usual things to try get the idle as smooth as possible- clean carbs, balance carb's, new plugs, etc, but it is still there. Just off idle the noise disappears entirely. Maybe it is just wear, though lash does not seem excessive. Thoughts anyone?

the noise is probably from the clutch, not the reduction gears. remove clutch and start sled to hear the difference. the reduction gears were changed from strait cut in 03 to reduce noise in the 04 and up sleds. the clutch noise is from the play where the plastic sliders wear in the movable sheave. they can be shimmed or replaced.

Set Idle at ~ 1500 RPMs.

Also, the sliders in the clutch could be wearing as previously indicated. I suspect that shimming them would work just fine.

Thanks a bunch folk's. I had to add two .1mm (about.016") shims to get clearance back to spec. I switched the sliders side to side as all the wear was on the load side. I am waiting 24hrs for the loctite to set and will give it a try tonight. Thanks again!

I used stainless shim washers purchased from McMaster Carr

What are you actually shimming on it? Were talking the primary clutch right? What plastic sliders are you talking about?
