Sidewinder mpg?

I'm getting around 10mpg. Running pretty hard on open lake in cold temps so should improve on trails.
How much does the cold factor in? She must drink more fuel when it's 30 below??

For those Canadians who use Metric....

My son and I did a trip into Quebec last week and by the way the trails from Swisha up into the park were incredible.

I had my new Sidewinder full to the top and we ran 168 kms to the lodge that's 105 miles and when I got to the pumps it took 27 liters to fill it back up. I don't know the exact size I assume 36 liters.

Anyways just passing this along.

My zr9k is a hog at 10.5 mpg and that's not riding aggressively either. Tested my fuel pump and it's good. Got a pressure regulator on order. Hope I can get the 13-15 mpg most of you are talking about. Will keep you all posted.

One thing I've seen, usually yamahas are pretty consistent mpg wise. When we had 3 vectors, they all take about the same fuel. My Apex would typically take a little more. I would expect from what I've seen, on average trails running at a good clip, and cranking it up when a field appears, 13should be a decent baseline..maybe if you need to you can squeak a little more.....but 10 sucks if gas stations aren't that close or one is closed.....

I have to agree that with my past nytro, Apex and my wife's carb vector are all about the same for mpg that is why I am a bit disappointed in the poor mpg I have seen with this sled. I was fully expecting the 13-14 I got with my others. But I am hopeful that since others are seeing good mileage that mine can too with hopefully just a new regulator. If that doesn't do it then I am unsure what to try next, maybe a leaner performance tune?

Was in in Quebec this past weekend. frigid temps, rode hard and fast. 12.5 mpg. I am at 2100 miles on sled.

Ran mine out of fuel @ 102 miles, another time had 99 miles on the tank and it took 9.7 gallons to refuel. That's about 10 mpg, but its getting better as the motor is breaking in, still under 1000 miles. I'm not a trail cruiser and use the power often...like all the time.
Well its good to hear someone put in 9.7 gal,of fuel, most all the charts I see say 8.9 and last year stated 9.9 so if you got 9.7 than its a good bet it holds 9.9 lol

Right....Not sure why Yamaha did that, the 18 viper states a 9.9 gal tank, every cat says 9.9 gal tank but the winder says 8.9 and it's the same tank for every model. Filled up twice with putting 9.5 gallons or more. Just hope the mileage improves over time but, like Steve I have a problem staying out of the throttle...it's just so much fun.

That is true! Best part for me is late in the day, maybe 70 miles to go, and I just filled it....LAST STOP..HAMMERTIME!! $GREEN FLAG! Since I know I can make it back regardless!

Now with 550 miles on ODO It does seem to be getting a tad better.

The first few rides it was not too good at all. I have been riding it pretty hard most the time so that is expected. But when riding with an Assault, a brand spanking new(zero miles) 850, a 600 etec, and a 900 ace. Mine was always taking more then everyone else. And those other sleds some use 87 octane which is quite a savings up here. The 600 etec is incredible, and 900 ace simply amazing on fuel economy with 87. Obviously alot less HP too.

The Assault was always the worst on MPG in our group until now, where I use more every fill up. But I have been running it hard mostly, and its been break in miles, and it is getting better. Im interested to see how this may change with the Hurricane TUNE now going in.

One thing that is interesting, is how these gauges react. All sleds have a learning curve with the gauge. I got used to my doos over the past few seasons, but with this sled, it does need a burp, albeit smaller then the XS doo. But I do burp it still to get a extra maybe 1/2 gal in or so, where as the doo XS could yield closer to a gallon burp.

When burped, the gauge will read full for quite some time.....and MPG seems incredible(LOL) but then it will drop from full down to 5/8 or so very fast....lol Then it seems to hang around 5/8 down to 1/3 for a very long time too....I have not got below that as we fill often, but I did run out on Toms last yr and had NO light, and I recall when light comes on its very late IMO and you dont have much left to get anywhere at all.

850 really is a miser. Buds brand new, zero miles 850 barely uses any fuel. They sure got those etecs down pat on fuel economy, and the new 600 coming out for mid season release should be even better on economy. Its really too bad the 2s just will never have the longevity of a 4s engine, as they sure can be good at many things, just no grunt down low and no real life expectancy and can leave you stranded at any given time with little reason. 4s engines, and YAM engines even moreso,is the #1 reason this winder gives me the warm and fuzzies, even though there are several undesirables we are dealing with, but most wont leave ya stranded and waiting for a new motor like BRP hands out often.

When new I found my winder was noticeably harder on fuel than an 11 apex and 15 Switchback I was riding with. My last trip out, and around 600 miles on the machine, I ran very close to the same as an 08 Nytro so hoping its getting better.

Yamaha...for the discerning snowmobiler!
LOL!

I noticed a thread discussing replacing the red elbow for fuel return line on the winders as they are restrictive. I recall a few years back a friend with an apex that had a partially blocked gas return line. Caused the sled to run very rich at lower rpms. I wonder if the restrictive red elbow is causing some Sidewinders to run rich at lower rpms with decreased fuel mileage. Just a thought.

I have been getting good fuel mileage with my Winder but that's probably because I ride like an old man. I have no idea what the new elbow will do but I did change mine because I figured it must have some benefit.

I checked my elbow tonight and it has the black updated version on it from the factory....still only got 10mpg but like I said I'm using the throttle all the time.
