Hey, my sled is getting zero miles on it this season :o| but during the pre-season check a couple months ago I noticed damage to the oil filter access door underneath. Does a skid plate cover this area to protect it?

Mike

Yep comes down the lower nose cone between the skis and all the way to the end of the motor housing. I just put mine on.

Thanks. Haven't been a big fan of them but I guess they serve their purpose after looking at my punched-in access door.

That is the reason i put mine on, took a look the other day and noticed my access door in the same condition. figure once lucky, twice new sled!

Well I have been thinking about removing mine because ice gets frozen in around the steering joints and makes for stiff steering. Others have seen the skidplate pry right off from the bottom due to ice getting in there.

Yeah I have read about a few people with that issue, I have the ability to put mine in a heated garage every time, so it thaws out. I don't think it will be a problem for me. :jump:

I wouldn't ride without one anymore. I took a bowling ball chunk of ice in the belly at about 65 mph and all it did was crack the skid plate. Without it I would have had a mess...Definitely worth the money..

I had over 2000 damage to my 06 venture. If I would of had a skid plate damage would of bin minial. I have one now.

The mechanic at the local shop told me he drills three holes at the low points on the plate (don't know why he didn't do mine ahah) and that allows for drainage - so I'm going to try that to help and prevent the ice build-up .

Wow, are those things ever overpriced - $150 Cdn plus tax for a piece of plastic! But I guess, worth it.

I definately would put one on the 3-holer seeing the oil filter is rght on the other side of the plate.......

I guess I've been lucky with my Apex. The skid plate has always been tight, I haven't had any ice build up underneath, and during the winter my sled is almost always either outside or in a non-heated garage. I just changed the oil last night and was thinking to myself that my skid plate doesn't have many nicks, cuts, or scrapes - but I'm glad that I have it.

I drilled out my ultraplate about 6 holes total 3/8"
It definately helps drainage.
I tried to drill from the back of the sled upward at a 45 degree angle to try and avoid snow being forced into the holes.

Plate didn't pop yet.
