I purchased some Slydog powderhound skis for my 07 Apex GT last year. I put on 6" carbides with these skis. I installed them with no adjustments at all. I had hard steering and little floatation with the original skis and horrible darting. These skis seemed to fix the darting. I then studded my sled here a week or so and I now have some darting. The darting is not horrible but it is annoying. I replaced the 6" carbides with 8" carbides but this does not seem to have made it any better.
I have been told I should shim the skis but there is a difference in opinion as to whether I should shim the front of the back of the skis. Has anyone else with these skis had any success with shimming? If so what did you do?
Thanks,
Brad

Are yours toed in or out. Most skis are slightly toed out while the slydogs should be toed in slightly (1/8"). If you do a search on this forum you should be able to find out. My attack has the race skis & was studded last year, toed in 1/8" & I found very little if any darting last season with this set up. Now have the iceripper xt track but haven't been out yet due to low snow conditions in southern New Brunswick so don't know how they will behave now..

I have Slydog Powderhounds with bergstrom 8" triples and his ski savers. I have 168 studs and ZERO darting. I am running stock which is slightly toed out.
The Bergstrom Trips have over 1500 miles on them now and look almost new. Well worth the price you pay for the quality. I was eating normal carbides every 500-1000 miles.

I've shimmed the front 5/16" as per Scott B. and it just lifts the front of the carbides off the garage floor just a little. This setup no darting and easy steering. As a tip with the shim under the rubber its obvious the holes are way out of line. I started by lifting the front of the ski and twisting to get the bolt started thru the outside hole, then tapped thru till it got to the opp. side. To get the inside holes lined up I used a small c-clamp to compress to rubber block. One end under outer edge of ski and the other over the flat top of the spindle. Just turn down c-clamp and align.
Just a way that worked for myself.

So are you telling me the shim needs to go under the front of the rubber pushing the front of the ski down or under the back pushing the front of the ski up?

Slydogs are abnormal in that to get results you do shim the front of the ski and toe them in slightly. I believe I have mine shimmed 1/4" in the front and toed in 1/8". Seems to be a good setup, although I could probably toe in slightly more, as I do experience MINIMAL darting when the ski bottom gets caught in other tracks

I found that both on my stock skis and Skidoo Pilots, I would have the shim at the back of the rubber, but with the Slydogs, I had the shim mounted to the front of the rubber.

Thanks Guys! I appreciate all the good feedback. I love the floatation, turning effort, and control of these skis but would like to eliminate the darting so I don't need to feel like I could get sucked off the trail. They tracked straight last year so I am sure I can get them tweaked in with a little adjustment. I will try the shims in the front and check the ski alignment.
Thanks for all the help.

Off topic, but where in MN do you ride, Brad? I have a place north of the Brainerd area and plan on taking a ride up to International Falls this weekend if the weather isn't too cold. Great year for snow so far in northern/central MN!!

I live in Grand Rapids. We are having an unbelievable year for snow so it has been a lot of fun so far. Enjoy your ride, but most of all be safe!!!

I'd like to ride the Grand Rapids area at some point. I've been over in the Remer area, but never as far as GR.

Jwifferdill,
We have some nice trails in the Grand Rapids area. The Taconite trail goes all the way from Grand Rapids to Ely. I have never riden all the way but I guess it is a nice ride if the trails are groomed. The Remer trail are nice too except they are not always well maintained.
Enjoy your ride!
