On Yamaha's parts fiche, they call this gear,
JOINT # 8EK-47715-00-00 . Port Yam list it for around $11. Is that the correct gear to cut for better Speedo readings? Seems like a odd thing to call a gear. #8 in pic.

well if you remove your secondary and look at it,you will also call it a gear i think....LOL....to me it looks exactly like a gear, having teeth and all....
grind off 2 of those teeth(pic below) on opposite sides for a perfect speedo at all speeds(tested mine with my GPS)

its called a "gear" but it does not function as you would normally think. It functions with a pulse generator (sensor looking thing). As the teeth move by the sensor (no contact is made) a AC current is produced. The faster the more current .... The speedo is calibrated to convert that current into speed.
Its the same system many car ABS systems use.

Dan, did you check miles traveled for accuracy after cutting. And to everyone I KNOW this has been discussed in other threads.

I have 2 teeth cut off side by side and my speedo reads 3-4 mph low from my gps and at the track all last summer. The odometer reads lower than the actual miles traveled but thats OK just keep it in mind between gas stops. I will get another gear and try opposite sides to see if it reads more accurately.

so what does cutting the teeth off do to make it more accurate? just wondering.

Each spline on the gear equals how far or how fast the sled is going depending on how many are passing the sensor at a given time. If you take off two of those counters it will read lower.

hey bud...
Stone...when did you buy an apex??....remember MINE is an 06!....and there has been some talk about yammie closing the GAP somewhat,do you guys with 07s,08s better TEST like i did..cut one tooth first, then take GPS with you...test test test!
wow that is bizarre...i tested mine at 118mph with GPS and also 30mph and about everywhere in between....GPS/speedo were dead nuts on with 2 teeth opposite sides...what year is yours?
I dont think opposite sides would change anything,i just did it this way to balance it out better...
and YES it will LOWER your mileage, which is just another BONUS IMO.
