What about a modified SR for trail comfort. I like the idea of less weight better handling etc Than a Vector. BUT as a trail rider I though the seat was awfull too hard and to narrow because I had to sit down at the front against the tank. at 5' 8 my knees where against the plastic to feel comfortable with the bars. A similar problem to the first gen REV. the rear suspension from all accounts is not the equal of the mono shock in terms of groomed trail bump compliance.
What about a bar riser that tilted back to get us vertically challenged folks further back and a softer seat option, maybe a BOSS seat AND a Monoshock or M10-20 rear suspension all to make it acceptable as a trail sled for hundreds of miles a day not just a ditch banger. Some more wind protection? Anybody thinking of doing these mods......... Or did I just describe next years new Vector?

Hate to say it but I don't think the viper is for you. Although it was designed to be a performance trail sled not a ditch banger. But maybe with some mods you can make it work for you.

Friend has 800 cat, LOVED the front suspension, handling etc didn't love having to sit basically on the tank,or the seat. Rear suspension good, but not as good as the mono shock in groomed trail bumps.so it's a real dilemma for me VS a Vector. Makes me wonder if Yammie will combine the two? Like Doo has done aggressive and a laid back version on the same basic platform.
Sure seems the demand is there. Hate to say this but maybe both Cat and Yamaha will make a new 2-up chassis. They both are due and in a Cross tour like configuration alot of people would really like it for trail touring single.

I have a 07 apex with a mono in it and when the trail gets rough I go home because it can't handle the big whooped out trails....thats where the nytro comes in....but it just doesn't corner very well.....o it will corner but with a lot of rider input
09nytro the Apex suspension both types has really been tweaked by Yamaha the last 3-4 years.Big improvement that will handle most groomed trail junk with very good comfort at speed. If I rode those type of trails alot such as the grades in Munison I know I would buy one. I dont and I am man enough to admit that at 140 lbs a Apex will be in control of me rather than me of it. Its just not the sled for me but maybe someday when the XC bug has left me.

Oh I know it has ....I'm sure the newer ones work great ...I don't ride groomed trail all that much but when I do I ride it and it is great ....75 plus down trails but when it starts to get rough , oh boy she will knock the sh$$ out of you....plus it is soooooo heavy .....but it's a nice sled for groomed trail

With proper setup, the MonoShock skid is actually a capable rough trail skid. I would go as far as saying it is AT LEAST as good as the DualShock skid that sits in the FX Nytro.
Unfortunately, Yamaha themselves blew the reputation of this skid. During the first couple of years, every MonoShock sled was delivered with silly soft shock absorber specs clearly directed towards the groomed trail market. For couple of years, Yamaha reps refused to listen to requests and advices from customers, dealers as well as suspension suppliers. Completely forgetting about the original intent of the design (it was designed to be a snocross skid...!), they tried to turn it into a plush touring suspension. The few of us that installed stiff enough aftermarket shocks, soon realized the big bump potential of this skid.
The MonoShock skid was just a single decision away from ending up in the FX Nytro (I think there are pictures of protptypes floating around...?). Though, the reputation earned in the early Apex models and some marketing guru claiming "a big bump sled that does not have torsional springs will never sell - let's copy Doo's SC4..." made sure it never happened.

Yes and now you see a little Monoshock design in the R-Motion. I will never forget the old video of Doug Henry? pounding that Mono through a HUGE whoops section at speed. Very impressive and what could be in future.

Well there's the rub I am only a groomed trail rider there is virtually no ungroomed trails in N.E that are legal to ride some backwoods trails and roads in Maine and NH but with 14000 miles of groomed trails in Maine alone there isn't much reason to ride non groomed trails unless you like getting the snot beat out of you. Now the groomed stuff gets plenty bumpy on busy weekends ESP. Getting in and out of towns for gas and grub but for the most part these are choppy smaller bumps not 2-3 ft moguls.
you guys dissing the mono, depends where you ride it. when it came out in the 06 Vector I was so disappointed my 05 didn't have it mine is torsion spring. The mono was awesome silky smooth you couldn't even feel the bumps in comparison it felt M-10 like made my torsion spring sled feel like a 1 ton truck compared to a Lexus
