Starter went out on the trail on my 07...

Thanks RedPhazer......How about the coolant or anything else I should know before I start unplugging hoses?

Can these starters be rebuilt? Or can I use a non-OEM starter?

I just talked to the starter rebuilder shop locally and they said most can't be rebuilt and he is checking on a replacement starter that might be non OEM.....any thoughts?

Thanks yam177 for the advice, I can always use little tips like that...those are the things that cause you to throw things and cost you an extra $250 ...
Where do you guys find all the tolerances and torque specifications? It seems like around the forum people throw them out every now and then..

There is a PDF of the manuel somewhere on here. I just go by feel but I have been an Auto mech for 15 years. Certain things I torque but things like an oil drain plug I just feel

Looked hi and low in the manual and could not find torque spec for bolts that secure the front clip to the bulkhead. Anyone know?

I remeber it was not much, not even worth pulling out a toque wrench. Just snug it becaues the expanding and contracting it does is goint to make it tighter.

I did them at 20 ft lbs.

Hope I did not pull out the threads. :o|

I snugged mine up pretty tight. Probably more than 20lbs. I think you'll be fine.

I couldnt find it either.Manual says for 8mm bolt its 11ftlbs.That seems a bit light to me also but thats what it says. But dont forget Loctite.

I talked to the guys at me Yamaha dealer and they said 20-24 ft lbs and yes blue locktite of course. They have had a few with bolts falling out.

I have the starter out and I am putting the new one in...which wire connects to which terminal on the starter?
I need to line up the line in the starter with the little protrusions on each end of the starter right?

The dealer took out the starter and I didn't want to pay them the $600 they wanted to put it back in and replace it at full retail price (in case you are wondering why I didn't check the wires before I removed it :) )

Holy Cow!Its been awhile but big red one goes to the copper colored post and the other black one goes to one of the starter mounting bolts
