seeing the missing winding chunks on the stator, is there an easy way to check for the missing peices without pulling motor?

is there a screen to stop them from migrating out of the bottom of the engine with the oil?

i got 1/2 of one of the missing coils out of the stator cover when i replaced it.

Crap, I did not even think of that when you mentioned finding that one piece when removing the cover. With it being a copper wire, a magnet is of no use.

The oil pump pickup has screens built into it. It can not get recirculated into the oil system, will just stay floating in the bottom or stuck against the screen.

thank you!

My question would be what would cause such (or any) stator failure ? Excessive electrical loads? Bad voltage regulator? Since owning Yamahas and hearing about stator failures, I have tried to mitigate this by changing the halogen headlights to HID or LED lamps. So far I've been able to avoid stator meltdowns.

I'll be helping my buddy to replace a failing stator on his Venture Lite. His might have failed since he still had halogens and also has a damaged rear handwarmer that was left on since who knows how long.

Like Mooseman, I took precautions regarding electrical loads when I became aware of all the stator failures ... my headlights are disconnected. No need for them in broad daylight in the middle of an empty lake. LOL

well, the sled needing the stator (2011) has 40000 km (24000 mi) on it and had no issues until the battery developed an internal short while riding in febuary 2025 at a ty ride. i do admit to having one of rock's cell phone chargers on it and charging my cell and running a gps in the past. for the last 5 seasons, the only thing getting charged off of sled was a cell phone (other than battery). i did have led headlamp bulbs from rock in it for 5 years until they burnt up a ballast/module and popped the fuse. still have @Crewchief47 thumb print on that ballast. during this time was when i was running gps and cell charging but that was over 5 years ago. it is running stock wattage halogen bulbs. i do have a brand new regulator i bought as a spare that i might throw on it.

the battery that shorted was just outside its warenty window and had not exhibited any of my normal change it out signs.
