Vector RS '08
Hi,
I'm new to the sledding world.
Acquired an '08 vector RS 121. changed the starter Feb. 10, then battery problems. On the first ride out after the starter, 1 hour in, lost all charge on battery. At a buddies place, swapped in his battery. By the time we got home (25 min ride) head light was out, and sputtering again. decided it was the stator to change. ouch. 2 bolts behind the frame, so I lifted the motor. Now I was "gifted" a stator from the fella I purchased the sled from. It is not new- actually shows the same marks of overheating on the same area's of the stator. Is there any known issues of electrical overdraw in the system that would cause the stator fail?

Recently replaced the stator, starter, and I.C.U. in my 06 Vector. As it turned out, I really only needed to replace my starter which had seized internally and the I.C.U.. The stator looked pristine, but years ago I needed it replaced at about 15,000 kms., and I now have 48,000 kms. on my sled.
Apparently, the original stators were somewhat susceptible to heat, and that is what caused them to burn out. I had my stator replaced years ago due to my battery going dead as the stator was not producing 14.4 v to keep the battery charged up. I would not take the chance on replacing a stator with one that looks the same as your old one. I was lucky and found a new Yamaha Stator on ebay, for half the price of buying one from Yamaha Canada. I first bought an aftermarket stator as was much cheaper, but wire harness was a little different and appeared shorter than the o.e.m. stator that I took out. It may have worked, but considering the fun of getting it out, I wasn't going to take the chance of it not working and having to tackle the job a second time.
