2013 FX Nytro
Hey, I have a 2013 FX Nytro that was new non-current. Still under warranty till Jan 2015. I have had inconsistent issues with the throttle sticking. I will mention this sled is bone stock as PDI'd. It first occurred within weeks of pickup and continued to occur through the winter. The dealer had me spray a lubricant on the small white bearings on the end if the throttle body shaft. Didn't help. What occurs is while at stop signs or moving in and around gas stations the throttle will stick while at low speed and the sled will lurch ahead for about 5 to 10' until the TOPS kicks in, reduces rpm and the sled stops moving. Warning light and Code 84 flash on the display. Wait till it clears and continue riding. I park the sled in a non-heated shed, covered. I recently took it in to a dealer to have addressed but they couldn't replicate the problem, I.e. Get it to do it themselves so they were apprehensive about pulling it all apart to perhaps find nothing all on my dime. They checked that it was PDI'd properly and that the throttle cable was routed properly and had the proper free play. (Different dealer than purchased from). The experienced tech said he had not seen a Nytro do what I was describing. It is a safely issue and I want it fixed under warranty. My concern is how do I prove it to them. It's sporadic and inconsistent. What could it possibly be? Only at low speeds. My only thought is that it's steering related cause at higher speeds I'm never or rarely using the bars to full turn.

Had the same exact issues with a 12 xtx turning the bars hard right , had to adjust the cable free play, and reroute the cable.

Thanks, my worry was it was a frayed cable, bad sensor or the throttle body wasn't returning to full closed. Not much makes sense other than cable length though. I do recall it occurring during one right turn as it ended up forcing me out onto a road then the TOPS disabled it from moving..... wonderful..... Is there and obvious route to put the cable to get more length up by the bars?

Its under warranty the dealer should fix it. Take a Pic with your phone next time she throws the code 84 and show the dealer and explain to them again your concerns. If they don't help call Yamaha Customer Service and complain as that is a safety issue. Let us know how you make out.

Hey Pete, the dealer pulled the history off the computer and seen the codes. Then they ask me questions like, if you wear big gloves they could get caught in the throttle and cause the TOPS to activate. In one way I see there point. Yes there's codes but they can't get it to do it so it's just my word. I wrote Yamaha Canada about it, explaining the problem and explaining that I don't want to be responsible for costs related to the issue. The dealer says I'm responsible for cost for them to inspect the machine. If it's deemed to be a manufacturer defect then it would be considered warranty. Otherwise it's my bill to pay. My apprehension is it's a sporadic issue. Here's what Yamaha said,

"Good morning Bryan!

I am sorry that you were dissatisfied with the response from the dealership however This is general information certified Yamaha dealership Canada-wide would mention up-front to their customers.
Its just to let know if upon the diagnosis done on the unit from the certified technician, confirms its a manufacturer defect, then it will be covered under warranty however if its not a manufacturing defect, there will be a labor cost charged to the customer .
If it was not a manufacturing defect, I don't think a customer would appreciate to get a bill in their hands without notice.

Regards,
Remi"

The tech and others drive it around the yard and noted no issue. They inspected it for proper cable routing and gave it a visual inspection. Called that it was ready, they found nothing, thought the throttle free play was maybe a little too much and out on spec. They talked to Yamaha about it. They note that "they see no reason to go any further at this time, but just to get a good look at the throttle bodies and butter flys etc would take 1-1.5 hours at customer expense." That cost me $57.

I plan to try and figure out how to get it to act up consistently then take it to them and show them. Short of that I'm at a loss.

Bryan that sucks and I see your point its hard to fix it if it isn't broke(dealer). I installed the OFT relocate kit (best upgrade for the Nytro). I had to relocate my throttle cable due to this upgrade and its included in the instructions with the kit. I was wondering if you could relocate the cable same as this kit would have you do and if that might stop the issue. I have never had any Code 84's or any code other than the overheat light come on when trails were icy ( installed ski scratchers to fix that). Here is a link to there website if you have the bucks to do the upgrade go for it or you want to check out the instructions. You may not be able to relocate the throttle cable in the stock handle bar position I'm not sure.
