stock & TP springs: i got the DATA

After being in bed all week with the flu & reading every single post while SAB1 was texting me pics of MY trails, i finally got out to the garage to compare the stock springs to the Thunder Product Orange springs.
I took every measurement i could including weighing them. I know , i know what does weighing them do? NOTHING, except i have a cool new digital pocket scale for my weights & so far i've weighed everything in the house.....a penny, an acorn, a condomn. PM me if you need to know any of these...

Here it is....

PRIMARY: Stock (gold,pink,gold)
-weight=172grams
-length=114mm (unsprung)
-wire=5.5mm
-#of coils=5 & 3/4
-compression=265 pounds (i did this with scale until coils touched)

PRIMARY: Thunder Products Orange
-weight=142grams
-length=88.36mm
-wire=5.84mm
-# of coils 4 1/2
-compression=280 PLUS (i could not squish this the whole way) 290 to 300 is my guess

SECONDARY: Stock (yellow)
-weight=251grams
-length=77.5mm
-wire=6.1mm
-# of coils=5 1/2
-compression=105 pounds

SECONDARY: Thunder Products Orange
-weight= 167grams
-length=87.45mm
-wire=5.7mm
-# of coils=4 1/2
-compression=138 pounds

Now for the tension on the secondaries. Unfortunately i didn't have a scale while guard was off & the digital scale i bought moves too much. So back to Cabela's for a better than average scale; I'll use FOURLOAD's data on the TP spring.

SECONDARY: Thunderv Products Orange spring per FOURLOAD
60 degrees=22 lbs
50 degrees=18 lbs
40 degrees=14 lbs

SECONDARY: Stock Yellow (with TP 33/35 helix)
60 degrees=18 lbs
50 degrees=16.5 lbs

I'll try a few more pulls with stock helix & different degrees & one with shims behind helix.
That's all i had in the tank boys.

BTW: A penny weighs 38.6 grams which is 18 grams LIGHTER than a condomn.....who knew!

Hey Steve I'm glad you are feeling better but this info is just adding to the madness that is going on here on TY. I think all our heads are ready to explode! I think we need some factual data that only those who manufacture and sell theses products can provide. I really liked the info that Dalton had to offer when he explained that a similar spring that was longer with more coils was actually softer than one with less coils and shorter. Sometimes you can't judge a book by only its cover.

Curious how much more a studded condom weight's?

Heading up to Maine this Saturday. I have a Fluke temp gun & i'm ready to compare 8JP to 8DN belt with TP springs & possibly stock if i don't like the results.
Steve you are welcome to stop in,wife and I will be up from Thursday to Monday,i am just off connector 112 right by the hanger in patten. pete

2018 All black... sorry no scale so i could weigh it.

Hate to say it Steve, but to push a spring till coil bind is WORTHLESS DATA. You wasted your time here pal.

To test a spring you need a drill press or spring tester and measure springs at a installed height and then measures at a full shift out height. These are measurements the factory or aftermarket uses and can be found in their publications. The measurement readings are taken at is also very critical. All must be measured at EXACTLY the same heights on a good scale.

To compound things, driven torsion springs also measure twist as well as compression.

I understand this, but it does help to realize how much stiffer one spring is to the other. To those who didn't get to look them up it may help or it may make things more confusing. It's for them to decide.
I know the temps i take this weekend with different springs & settings will be the actual test that i'm trying to achieve and there's no better way then to run it & test.
Reading numbers off a chart meant nothing to me. When i couldn't compress the Orange spring, then i realized how stiff it is.
Plus i have 3 new scales & nothing to measure.....

So it looks like they did change the 2018 rear spring from 2017. Does anyone know the difference?

2018 LTX LE Stock Spring all black with small yellow stripe on middle coil.

Just to clear up some confusion......

I've taken apart the secondary on both my '17 /SW LTX-LE and my wife's '18 SW LT-X LE and both sleds have the same spring installed. Black secondary spring with a small yellow strip on one of the coils.

The set up sheets that came with each sled also shows the exact same spring including the part number (90508-60020) as standard.

If anyone cares to take a look at the Technical Update Manual that cannondale27 posted up last month: https://ty4stroke.com/threads/2018-technical-update-manual.150927/ you will find the every single SW model comes with that spring regardless of track length or suspension model.

Oh and BTW stevewithOCD....Thanks for starting this post. Even though some of the information that you posted is worthless to most of us (just kidding) the entertainment value of your posts continue to be off the charts.

I was just like you a couple of years ago when I got my first gram scale for clutching purposes and drove my wife crazy weighing things. Please don't hold back the facts that you find on how much things weigh. I actually found out how much my brain weighed by simply pulling it out through my right nostril and putting it back though the left one. I was however disappointed to find out that my brain weighed (1280grams) on the lower weight range for humans.

I posted all this months ago, same springs no changes from 17 to 18 at all.

The ones I have seen both 17s and 18s all have a small yellow stripe.

Get the dalton spring guys.
