One question I have is, does the heat shield stop snow from hitting the motor or is I open?

The stock shield allows snow and whatever else to hit motor if it gets carried to top of track.

Would there be any down side to a better closure piece to stop debris from entering the engine area. I haven't had the tank off but plan to get this header!

It's risky heat wise. That said I ran mine with the hole completely blocked off last season. I used header wrap though.

I was thinking of baffling it maybe a couple inches from the engine flange and the majority of the header exposed to snow?

Hottest part is right by the head though.

Shouldn't matter ,a lot of the time no snow is getting there anyway .my apex heat shield was pretty close to the motor with a gap around the pipes if I remember correctly. I've got a sheet metal shop so I can play around with it over the summer.
