Friend of a friend, who does NOT do much maintenance, finally wanted to check his clutches out. Since I have a primary puller, I vollentered to help. Pulled lots of clutches in my time. THIS one came off way too easy ( no bang ) thinking to myself, upon closer inspection, looks like it spun on the stub mount, not a complete smear on the taper, but just a ring of it by the widest part. Kind of why Knapps idea of lapping is a good one. What is the best direction to suggest too him on this ?

Always lap at each install. Do not turn engine backwards!

If the surfaces are not damaged, clean the taper on clutch and stub shaft. Lightly heat the clutch taper with MAP gas, install and torque to spec.

I use Valve grinding compound on the stub shaft and seat primary on taper loosely and spin the clutch counterclockwise about 20 revolutions clean and install clutch.

Gotta say I have never had a issue with any clutch spinning. I only clean both surfaces with brake cleaner and torque to spec. Until it changes I’m sticking with the KISS on this one. By no means saying what you guys are doing is wrong, just never had a issue

X2. I've had to lap mine 2-3 times to get full contact.I use Valve grinding compound on the stub shaft and seat primary on taper loosely and spin the clutch counterclockwise about 20 revolutions clean and install clutch.

If it spun, the clutch would have welded itself to the stub and it would have been impossible to take off with a puller.

Thanks for all the insight, got ALL summer to get him going in the right direction. Best part is I dont have to ride his sled. Got my own to worry about.
