studding my RX-1

I am going to be studding my 05 RX-1 soon and I was wondering if there is anything I should know. By that I mean I was told by several people that I should only stud it down the middle because it will handle better that way. I was thinking of doing the standard 192 pattern but after hearing the suggestion of only studding down the middle I am having second thoughts. What are the benefits of this? Any feedback would be appreciated.

By far the most popular pattern by site members is 96 down the middle. You get sufficient grip for traction and safety, yet can still swing the back end around a little in the corners. Very few people have had any track or stud problems with this pattern. Studding on the outside portion of the track will give you more traction, but also increases your odds of track and/or stud problems.

Even though the stud manufacturers say you should use 192, 96 is plenty. No stud damage on my sleds using this pattern.

If you ride trails with a lot of ice you should run 144 studs down the middle. I have run 144 for the last 3 years with out a problem and it hooks up really good. Studding the outside with help in cornering but they are the ones you will mostly have problems with, ripping out. I don't think 96 is enouth but that is all up to each person.

I had 190 down the center of my warrior. There will be less in my new track this winter.

Don't put studs right in the middle of the center track. The backer will rub against the shock mount and wear it away. I have removed these from my track. Hopefully in time that I didn't weaken the mount too much.

96 down the middle, didn't bend or lose a single one with 1,600 miles this winter. Good hook-up, stops well, corners fine.

Me too, 96 down the middle. Great handling and hookup. Wouyldn't do it any other way.

How about tunnel protection...if need to???

How about front heat exchanger?

What lenght of stud should we use?

How about idler wheels...any premature wear? :?

I'm thinking of studding mine also...I just want to do it right!

My dealer said no extra tunnel protection was required and I have had no problems on either my 03 or my 05 RX-1 (4500 miles and 2200 miles respectively). Idler wheels haven't been an issue either. Not sure what length they installed.

I was also looking at the new "ICE RIPPER" from Camoplast...what do you guy's think?

I don't think that it will give you much hook-up out of the hole,but on icy situation I think it should give you some better handling.

Has any of you guy's had a chance to talk to someone who has tried or tested one out yet?

My 05 shock and mount has worn down a lot where the track rubs (end of the shock) and I didn't run any studs this season.

How many miles did you have the center studs installed for?

I bought a pre-punched Ripsaw and it has holes right down the center. I'm not sure if I should use them.
