i have an 07 attak that seems to use a little more oil then normal....im going to do a compression and or a leakdown test to check it out....do i still do it with a warm engine and throttle fully opened??? also what should my psi or leakdown be thanks..

Compression test you want a warm engine, I pulled all of the plugs out and tested with the throttle bodies wide open. Stock you want 200psi

Leakdown can be done on warm or cool motor I did mine after the compression test. The sucky thing about the leak down is you have to find TDC on each cylinder on teh power stroke so I use a hanger and rotate the clutch by hand (again all plugs out makes this possible) and watch the hanger which is on the top of the piston and wait for it to raise then slightly lower and then screw in the leak down tester. Problem is its a 4 strok engine so if you hook it up and its blowing out the exhaust the exhaust valves are open or your blowing out of the air box the intake valves are open. One two cylinders I got it first time on teh power stroke, but one I went through all 4 revolutions. Prepare for time and patence and if your a drinking man a few beers makes this more fun.

A compression test will tell you as much about the oil control rings as checking the belt will. The shape and design of the piston and second and bottom rings cannot be tested with the engine intact. Check compression if you like but interpret the results correctly, test with throttle wide open and the engine warmed up, also dry and wet. after that get the wrenches out if you're chasing oil consumption. First, make sure that the crankcase ventilation system is operational and then check for loose valve guides and poor seals. Rings are next. Good luck!!

just got back from testing the compression....heres what i found all cyls are 175 psi...this was a dry test...i did not do a wet test as of yet...hot engine and throttle wide open...sled has used 3.5 liters in 3200 kms...sled does still have warranty dealer is telling me to switch from the amsoil 4 stroke oil back to yamalube 0w30 and see how much it uses...to me i think oil has absolutly nothing to do with it...

My sled has 8400 miles and i have never added oil..

Its gotta be going somewhere.. Im betting its the breather or blow by..

so wheres it going the airbox is dry just a very slight film of oil in it...isnt compression down a bit specs are 179-212....so im under spec...any other input on this....to me if my compression is low and its using oil the rings are not sealing...getting by on top and bottom of the piston

Are those specs tested dry and cold or warm and with oil in the cylinders??

a teaspoon of oil in the cylinders could raise the compression alot..

i tested it hot engine dry with no oil....was reading a yamaha service test procedure to add oil to the cylinders if compression is low...gonna try that tomorrow...

sleds at the dealer now gettin a compression test done and im gonna be there watching it...well see what they have to say....there still stuck on the sythetic oil im using...
