This is getting old.

Interesting... What weight is that? And what secondary spring?
Original weight, inside bump removed at the tip. 70gr now I have played a lot whit different rivet weight at different hole whitout success... original secondary spring .
i forget secondary spring pocket machined .075 D&D roller even if the original had no flat spot after 2000km on my sled.

SET THE OFFSET AT 61.1mm OR YOUR PROBLEM WILL CONTINUE. Sorry but I've said this many times since last fall. Most sleds need a 2mm shim behind the secondary to achieve this. A little more than 61.1mm is better than any less than 61.1mm. Their spec range doesn't work. The fixed sheave is putting pressure on the outside of the belt until your secondary opens far enough to float, by setting at 61.1mm it floats sooner and has room to operate properly. Also check entire secondary for casting flash not remove and remove.
Thanks for the advice. My sled is in the trailer up north but I'm pretty sure the dealer told me the offset was just in spec.

I have a shim already behind the clutch. Are you recommending I put a larger shim in (2mm)?

Sorry I wish I had the sled here to know more but I will bring the shim with me this weekend. Thanks.

No problem on the help. These sidewinders were all over the place as far as offset from the factory. From testing I've done the clutch alignment is best towards the 61.1 end of the spec. of a little over. It's just the first thing I check when working with the sw and blowing belts. Dealers just check to see if it's within the range given them by Yamaha. That range doesn't work. It needs to be out farther for proper alignment. Check the offset yourself. If you need help send me a pm and I will give you my phone number and you can call me when your doing it.

Yes,i think that is just what shagman is saying, add a shim,if you now have just one, like mine,i will recheck my offset now that miles are being added again, when I set it up,to what the spec gave us,it worked out that the single .040 thou or 1mm stock shim mine came with was w/in spec, but I will now check and make it closer to the max range which in thousands is 2.41956 with my offset tool I have and my verniers,to make it as close as possible. Thanks shagman.

How do you check the offset in these things? None of my old center to center or off set tools fit!!!!

Center to center is not adjustable. Offset is measured from the back edge of primary to outer edge of fixed sheave on secondary.

set it to what I listed above.

thanks, I better check it

I have to say, not sure what exactly solved any potential issue I may have had. There was some heat being generated early on, no blown belts. Following the advice here, I have TP weights and spring with glide washers, 35/39 shimmed out, TP adjuster, can't remember what mm I ended up at after re-shimming driven, but after installing TD Powertrail last week and running hard up and down etc. in deep snow and hard pulls to dial in the weights, clutches were cool to the touch after an hour of abuse. I was shocked and very pleased. There is a cure. Thanks to Shag, Nos and Lonn.

Huh, mine is out @2mm. Almost like you guys know what you are talking about.

Forgot to add that when I shimmed helix I put a new stock driven spring in because they are cheap and the other was trained differently. Left wrap at stock 3-3 and didn't have lasting snow to test anything else. Once I was comfortable that clutches were cool and weights good, I just wanted to ride. Did about 140 miles playing in the 4-8' deep drifts during the big blow with the new set up.

I blew my first belt at 500 miles. 17 LTX SE Always had a lot of belt dust on the inside and outside of panel since new. Had my dealer check clutches and the offset was right at 61.1mm, no flat spots on rollers and springs both looked good. I did notice some paint missing off the primary spring on two coils. A Yamaha factory rep happened to be there while my sled was there and wanted the broken belt and the details of how I was riding when it broke. Had the dealer give me a new belt and clutch inspection under warranty. He said something about them possibly coming out with a knew belt
