Yamaha also makes a carb sync thats easy to use. Part #YU44456-90890-03094. It's basically a vacuum gauge that easily hooks up to the carbs. Syncronizing the carbs really makes a difference.

I cleaned the carbs again and it helped, but the problem is not solved. The idle jumps around alot. They definately need to be synced.

Mike are you sure about those PN for the synchronizing tools? i've seen a couple different things in looking around. the one pic looks like a vacuum gauge with a multi-port valve. i think that YU44456 number is a vacuum mate and it's like $700. i'm getting conflicting info on these tools and part numbers

is it difficult to clean the carbs? do you have to remove them to clean them? does someone have a step by step cleaning process? I am worried that if I remove them to clean them then when I go to re-install them I will mess something up for sure.

If you're unsure AT ALL how to do it, let a GOOD dealer do it for you. One hour @ $shop rate$.
The damage you can do by not doing it right could cost you thousands.

Jamesc. The part number I show is from page 1-5 of the Yamaha Service Manual 8FJ-28197-10. Give that a try. MiKe.

Alright, I did a vacuum test and I am reading between 3 in. and 17 in. very rapidly at idle. As I increase rpms the needle starts to steady, but still jumps 3 in. as it gets up to 15in. Any ideas? This could mean worn valve guides. I find that hard to believe. Could it do this if the timing was off? I don't know if the tensioner was swapped or not. It has 5000 mi on it. I just want to know if anybody has any ideas before I take it apart.

Take what apart? Why take ANYTHING apart until you know for sure what's causing the problem?

To be able to check the timing and valves, I will have to tear into the motor.

Problem found- Timing is 1 tooth off at the crank
I am guessing someone has replaced the cam tensioner.
