So I took my chaincase apart and the top gear has some play if you try and rock it on the shaft. Do I replace just the bushing or whole gear? Does this wear look excessive? I assume this is too much and something needs to be replaced....

Need to see the other side of gear but probably just the bushing

That on the edge of breaking down. Put it on backwards and it will have twice as much slop. Bushing wears on a angle.

Welcome to the STGBC!
Sloppy Top Gear Bushing Club

6500 miles is pretty good, but you would have had problems this year.
What bothers me the most about this pic, and the last 500 posts on this gear, is there are some people on this site that say we WHINE too much and not EVERYBODY has this issue.
Only us guys that are tuned or we ride too hard have this problem.
We hear "all sleds have issues" or even "the Japan sleds had issues" or "stop picking on Cat"

POOPY on the blind & Naivete!
This is one of the small things that kept Dan up in the middle of the night so..........he left. He's hoping this gets fixed on his 2022 ZR when he comes back.

EVERY year this needs to be looked at by EVERYONE!

This is my third year and I wanted to check the adjuster as well. I would rather do a little maintenance than break down on the trail. I just wasnt sure how much play is allowed. Any really seems excessive to me, but I wasnt sure.

If you take that top gear off and look at the color of it’s bushing, I’m sure you will find some copper/bronze type color instead of the all grey that was there originally. That seems to be a real easy visual test to judge your top gear bushing wear. I replaced my 21T with a 22T from Woodys in Topsham a couple of years ago for $23. My buddy did the same last year through a local Cat dealer for the same price. Cheap and easy just to swap if dealers still carry the cheaper no hole version, if not the version with holes will cost you more. I understand that the bushings are cheap but one has to be very careful not to damage during installation or face quicker wearing issues.

Nice catch Race!

You definitely have joined the STGBC. If you run that gear any longer you will be a member of the FTGBC. I would up grade to the new gears with the oil holes.

If you have an upper gear problem, are you guys just replacing the upper gear, the upper gear and chain, the upper gear, chain, and lower gear?

1702-491 (NEW 22 WITH OIL HOLE) is the one I used. Right or wrong I just replace top gear. Put 3 or 4 oz more oil than called for and don't over tighten chain.

I was going to just replace the bushing. Does anyone have the part number for that? I guess I can just get a new top gear if that is the only solution. I marked my chain so I could put the exact tooth back in the exact link in the chain. I think you should probably replace both and the chain, but that seems like expensive maintenance.
