Thanx. Its just every time i ride the rear plastic tabs that fit into the little black piece always pop out so i figured maybe the seat went over top . Any ideas how i can keep the tabs in place? I tried wrapping the tabs with black tape to make them a tighter fit but no luck. Am i missing somthing? The tabs just slip into a slit in the plastic . Is there supposed to be somthing in there to hold these tabs in place?

Heres a pic of the side of the tank where the tab is out of place. It just pops into an empty hole/slot. Very loose fit which leads me to believe that maybe theres supposed to be a clip or somthing else that im missing.
Sorry guys says my pic is too large and i have no idea how to change it so i hope someone can help me withoit it.

If that plastic tab on the gas tank cover is in original, unmodified condition, it will have a protrusion on the upper back side of it. The protrusion actually makes it difficult to get the plastic footwell piece off of it. So it could be several things, it is possible that you are not pushing it down far enough to snap into place, or someone has either broken or modified the plastic slot that it slides into, or former owner thought he was a genius by filing off the protrusion so that next time he would be able to get it off easier. Best way to find out, is take your top panel(hood) off, take the side panel off, get a big phillips #3?, and take the three phillips screw bolts off the plastic piece(two are obvious where your foot goes, and one is hiding under the corner of the seat but accessible, just lift the corner a little with one hand and slip the screwdriver in there.
Remember when you put the plastic piece back on, the shorter screw goes under the seat.

Sorry, to take that picture I would have to have the gas tank cover off because it is on the backside of the tab. Since that tab is sticking down on the outside like it is on yours, just pull that gas tank cover towards you so that you can rub your finger up the backside of the tab. Just before where the tab meets the main body of the cover, there will be a bump near the top that sticks out with a 90 degree edge. It is that bump(protrusion) that enters a thin rectangular slot in the top of the footwell plastic and then hooks in place. Check the tab, if that is ok, then see if you can get a visual on that slot, if you can't see, then take the footwell plastic out, and you will see exactly what is not working. That tab should not pop out.

Ya just as i thought previous owner broke/cut the backside tabs. Guess i will have to drill a hole on each side through both the tab and the slot and put in a short screw in to hold them in. Too bad.

Not sure where you are planning to put a screw, but I would not want that tip too close to the gas tank with your knee pounding on that panel all the time. I would first check all the screws and bolts in the seat, gas tank cover, and footwell plastic. Make sure that they are all there, all tight, and everything is in the right place. Even with that bump in the tab missing, I'm finding it hard to see how that tab is jumping out of that pocket.

My seat has a different yamaha seat cover with an extra 1.5"of foam on the top so that doesnt help.but unless im prepared to buy a new black tank cover then i have no other choice. Short screw just long enough to go through the plastic with the slot and into the tab to hold it there.
I would NOT use a screw on that panel as it may crack the plastics. I would pull the staples out on the front of your modded seat, push back or cut the extra foam back a inch then re staple the seat. The seat mod is great but pushes up the tank cover, more if you have more foam added in that one inch area.

The guy that did the seat already cut bac the foam about 1" back from the cover. I pushed the tabs on each side down into the slots as far as i could put a small pilot hole through the side panel and theough the tab and put in a very small short screw through both.....far enough away from the tank so no worries there.....painted the head black and viola. Fixed. Thanx for all your help.
