I've heard from many respectable Yamaha Techs and from Yamaha themselves that 1L per yrs is par for the course. Some burn less for sure but this would be average.
My car has 300,000 km on it, including something like 80,000 km of 2000 lb trailer towing and something like 40 hours of road racing (on the race track). The high mileage 4-cylinder engine is now burning a little oil as it is "starting" to wear out. Right now it uses roughly 1/2 a liter every 5000 km (3000 miles).
I don't know who at Yamaha is telling you 1 liter per 4000 km is normal and all Yamaha 4-stroke sleds are doing this. It isn't true. Most of these Apex are burning virtually no oil.
You can argue that all 4-strokes do burn oil, but for a healthy engine "this burning oil" is probably typically in the 20-50 mL per 4000 km range; no where near the 1000 ml per 4000 km range.
My 07 RTX "burns" so little oil that I have no way of measuring it.

7200 miles on my apex and at most i add 1 ounce of oil a year 2200-2900 miles a year
Over heating an engine even ONCE could ruin your piston rings.. If you have over heated it several times it sounds like you fried the rings.. NOT GOOD!
If i were you i would check the compression..

Oil Comsumption
Well I got a chance to due a compression test and a leak down. I could not get a bore scope in the small sparkplug hole. I had 180lbs cranking compression and about 6% leakdown. The oil was dirty and smelled like gas with only 1500 miles on it plus a 2 1/2 quarts I added in between. I changed oil and put in Yamalube 0w30 Semi-Syn 3.3 ltrs and new filter cleaned everyting and double and tripple checked level! Reset Trip Meter. There was'nt any oil in engine bay and no sgns of any leaks. The spark pugs where very dirty and looked black runnign rich.I have the Dyno Jet air fuel and timming control on it and looking for some fuel curve maps to compare to. I have heard from people who turbo charge and supercharge these engines with no problems. Do these sleds run rich or lean at lower rpm like 6500 to 9500 from 9500 to 11000 should be peak power band. On one hand I hope there is nothin wrong and it was a human eror. like maybe they never changed the filter or oil the oil looked liked it had 4000 miles on not 1500 with a total of 6 quarts of oil. I know that there is only 2 trottles on something "Idle and Wide OPen" I ride it hard fast and on the brakes corner to corner stop sign to stop sign. Guys we ride with, last man at the breakfast table buys I will buy you a cold beer but I not buying breakfast. We will see this weekend goign to Trout Lake in UP.

With a funnel
Many manufactures say 1L in 3000miles is "normal"...I think it's to cover their butts...
Sustained periods of WOT is going to increase consuption for sure. By how much?? who knows. I know my sled uses very little oil but it still mists if I undo my EVAC hose and it gets run real hard.
If your oil smells like fuel I'd be getting a Wideband O2 and finding the rich area...that would go along way to curing the oil burning I would think.

on another post i read that normal cranking compression was over 220psi..
If that is the case you have low compression
Was it 180lbs per cylinder even, or did you only test one cylinder?

Any oil in the airbox?
I noticed some oil in my air box and in the filter when I went to change my oil filter. What issues cause this?
Also how much oil does it take to go from Low to Full on dipstick?
If you have more than a light film, which it sounds like you do...you should do a compression test. Most likely you've got a bad set of rings or piston. What happens is you are getting excess blow by and it pressurizes your crankcase and blows oil vapor and/or oil out the breather hose that goes into your airbox.
It takes about 1/2 of a quart or so to go from Low to full on the dipstick.

Per the Service Manual.
At Sea level compression standard 206 PSI, Minumum 179 PSI, Maximum 230PSI.
Make sure you test with all plugs out and throttle wide open. If low, yamaha suggests squirting a couple of drops of oil into cylinders before testing.

Wow, just wanted to say that thi is EXACTLY what is happening to mine, and surprisingly, with exact same mods....
This spring when I changed the oil (when there were no mods),it had roughly 3500kms on it with no oil missing, as in none was lost.
Now with the mods, I found myself with the low oil light coming on, and I thought to myself, what is going on here, must be a bad sensor. But sure enough, after ignoring it for a while, went to check the oil and it was down 2 quarts and smelled like fuel extremely bad and was black as it comes.
Also, it doesnt burn oil, there is no smoke and it doesnt smell like any EVER. I have had the chance to ride behind my sled while someone else was driving it and you cant smell anything.
Im starting to think that maybe the oil is coming out though the airbox somehow as there is no leaks anywhere, and it doesnt burn oil. I have put it on its side alot of times playing around, and maybe it leaks out like that for you too?, but I havent checked my airbox down below yet, but from the top, it looks and smells clean.

I have a 2007 ATTAK with 3500 miles and no engine, intake or exahust mods. Just suspension and clutching. I too have noticed from time to time that I burn oil.
One time at night we were using my headlight to work on a buddies Rex XP and the sled automatically shut off due to temperature increase. I packed snow on running boards and all was good. A few time this winter while riding the temp light came on but immediately I got into deeper snow or put snow on running boards.
Many times I have filled my fuel tank right to the top. When I open the trailer I smell gas. Is it possible that filling right to the top cause fuel to get into the oil and cause dilution?

Shane, The smell is when trailering is probably from the overflow. Last week, I filled my tank then took it in to the shop to change my hyfax. When I hoisted the rear of the sled up about 1 foot, the fuel started pouring out the overflow. I imagine if you fill it really full and trailer it to Quebec, you probably are just overflowing a little. The fuel cannot get into the engine when it is not running. The orifice on the fuel injectors are way too small and are closed when the engine is not running. If you had an injector "stuck" open, you might get a few drops but not enough to make it to the oil. You need the pressure from the fuel pump to get the fuel through the injectors.
Mine also burns a little oil and so does John's RTX. He only has about 4000 miles on his.
P.S. Were those trails in Quebec awesome or what????

When the engine has ben idling for three minutes and the coolant reaches 212f it will shut off to prevent overheating.Shane said:I have a 2007 ATTAK with 3500 miles and no engine, intake or exahust mods. Just suspension and clutching. I too have noticed from time to time that I burn oil.

I have the PCIII, Ignition Module, Air box Mod, and an Excell. After 2000 miles this year I checked the oil level and it’s right where it was at the beginning of the season. It takes very little vacuum for the crank ventilation to work. Even with the airbox mod there will still be plenty of vacuum for the crank case vent to work properly. Years ago the crankcase's use to be vented directly to the air through a vent tube. The bottom of the tube was open to the air, and was placed in an area that when the car was in motion a slight vacuum would be created just from the air flowing past the tube. So as you can see even with the air box mod there will still be sufficient vacuum. Something else is causing your problem.

thanks stoutner..I'll test them. I'm hopeing I had added too much oil when I changed it last. According to the PDF file it says adding too much oil to tank will make it go into air box.
I added oil to the 3/4 full mark cold then went on a long trip. How much does it expand on the dip stick markings typically when going from cold to hot?

It wont expand much. 3/4 when cold or even full when cold should be o.k.
