VECTOR MOTOR/CLUTCH NOISE?

1. I believe type787 is right because it has sort of a bell type clank to it versus a muted tick type sound the spline would make.

2. Two stroke tripples might not have had much of this because you get a softer power pulse every 120 degrees VS. 180 degrees on the RX1 and the 240 degree long stroke wallop of the vector.

3. The after market clutch break down tools that you see in all the catalogs should work $60? and up. I am pretty sure one would have to break down the primary to do the shims.

I am with Vector er it should be up to Yamaha to fix this noise .I have not
even rode it yet .Why should I have to spend money on parts and tools to
fix it .I bought it because I was tired of fixing my 97. Which by the way had the same noise only it wasn't as noticeable because of the rest of the noise.I shimed the clutch on that one noise was gone for about 3000 km but came back .

Even if you do shim the buttons, won't the rattle come back once the buttons start to wear ?

To all in this thread.....

The noise is in the primary, just as is being discussed here. I have also shimmed two primarys in the past week - one Vector, one RS Venture TF - and it has eliminated the noise. The shim kit is indeed a Yamaha part and if your dealer claims to not know what the heck you're talking about, tell them to look at the big blue/white clutching poster Yamaha sends to ALL of their dealers, it's been there for years on the LHS.

IF you decide to do this mod, MAKE SURE you stay within the tolerances specified on this poster and make sure that there are no sharp edges, burrs or ridges on the shims. If your primary was to stick closed ....well, you know what happens.

Otherwise, deal with the noise, it's no big deal and it hurts nothing besides your ears :D

And as a general statement, YES I agree that Yamaha should recall ALL of these primarys and have them shimmed to eliminate the noise.

It's too bad that noise is there, it really "cheapens" an otherwise meticulously refined snowmobile. Real shame.

Where did you get your clutch breakdown tool?
Maxximum Performance has got them for $229 yikes!!!
I thought I had seen them somewhere else for like $69

So, this noise does not hurt anything besides your ears? I would think that they wouldn't let it leave the dealer if that was a harmful noise.....

Guys the clutch noise is normal, this is simply a rattle in the clutch caused by the power pulses of the Vector and normal clutch tolerances . The RX1 has very similar noises nothing to worry about ;)! The noise is only present at idle, and it goes away as soon as throttle is applied.
I have heard about shimming the primary clutch buttons to reduce the noise. The shims are cheap, but you have to disassemble the primary clutch. Its not a quick fix, unless the you have the tools and experience.

There has been no failure, wear or problem with clutch function or performance.

;)! ;)!

Vector clutch/ engine noise

I have an '05 Vector ER back at the dealer right now with only 12 miles on it. I asked them to check the same knocking noise that is heard at idle and light throttle that sounds like it's coming from the primary clutch or engine. They assure me that they all do this, and their explanation is that it it the engine balance shaft and it it normal tolerances that are heard with no load on it. So far (12 miles worth) the positives far outweigh the negatives on this sled. The pull is fantastic, handling and ride is outstanding. My other sled is a '98 SX 600 and I love it, but sucker bumps tend to rearrange my spine. Love the way the skis hover above the snow on a good take off, and the ride is cushy.

Now if they could only figure out the real reason it went back for service...code 84 displayed 3 times during the 12 miles (throttle overide system) accompanied by several loud backfires from the exhaust. 20 seconds of idling and good to go again. Too warm for carb freezing, and it happened again after letting it heat soak. Any ideas?
