I have heard that Yamaha has issued an update for the problem and dealers are shimming the clutch under warranty.Does anyone know if this is true? I know they say it is harmless but I think that it "cheapens" an other wise great machine.

Yes, it would be nice to find out. I'm picking my sled up tomorrow morning after spending a week at the dealer. It would be nice to get that taken care of while it's there. I'll call them this morning and ask if they've heard anything.

What is the word? Is there a bulletin re: the clutch noise and shimming?

According to the service writer at Nelson's, there has been no bulletins or updates issued on the subject. He put me on hold while he checked for anything that may have recently come across, and found none. If anyone hears anything concrete let me know but until then, I'm going to try not to worry about it.

One thing I don't like is that clutch noise, it bugs the crap out of me, very, very noticeable from idle to 1/3 throttle. It's embarrassing as hell when your showing your new ride to someone and they ask "is that clanking noise your motor", no that’s just a design flaw nothing to worry about . I think if Yamaha can do anything to fix this issue they should ASAP. The new 4 stroke yammies are kind of unique right now and everyone I have shown the sled wants to hear it. I don't care if it doesn't hurt anything it degrades my enjoyment of my sled and gives people the impression that Yamaha 4 strokes have something wrong with them. When my Chevy Avalanche developed a very annoying dash rattle it was fixed fast and free!! Yamaha apparently knows about this issue and needs to step up to the plate and correct it or face turning off both current and potential customers.

MrSled, I will have to do this if Yamaha won't. Has anybody had a dealer do this and if so about how much will it cost.

Toys-R-Us, I can do this at my shop, if you're interested in my services let me know. It would cost you roughly $30 shipped back to you. If your interested let me know.

Hey Srx, I will wait a little while to see if Yamaha does anything. If not or if I just can't stand it any more I'll give you a call. Thanks

Hmmmm...you might have a line up for business here if it's guaranteed to stop that racket...

I called Yamaha today they told me that as of now there was no update for the noise but that they would document my calling and that if they started to see a problem they would take care of it. So if you guys want this fixed than start calling it only took a couple of minutes and now they have me on record in case something does get damaged I can prove that it was there right from the begining.

As was said before in this thread, the ticking noise does not cause any mechanical damage whatsoever, so I doubt that any TSB will be issued anytime soon.
Also, I think it is worth mentioning that the shim kit has been around long before the time of the 4-strokes, and also that the newer primary clutches are assemble to the same level of quality as in previous years, it's just that the 4-stroke engine pulses bring this sound out a fair amount more.
I think it's funny that now that we have lost the sound-blanketing racket of the 2-stroke, there are all kinds of misc. noises that have arisen

I hope everyone's talking about the same noise, because I'd hardly call this noise a ticking. It is a fairly loud knock, not a "tick". Loud enough to concern me a lot when I first heard it. I'm buying all of the explanations I'm hearing, but "tick" is definitely an understatement. Perhaps it is a harmless noise, but it IS going to be a scource of embarrassment this winter when I'm showing off my new Vector to my "brand X" friends. Oh well, the performance will have to speak for itself...
It definitely is nice not listening to that 2 stroke pipe blasting away under the belly pan though!

I agree the noise is quite noticable.
It is also significanlty louder on the RS sleds than on the RX sleds.
We had them side by side the other night.
