I'm looking for recommendations for either a tank bag or saddle bags for my 2012 Vector short track based on real world use. Something of quality, probably Yamaha, that won't remove paint or destroy the good looks of the sled.
Any recommendations?
Thanks

both. You've got to have a tank bag for spare gloves ,headpieces, maps etc. With the lack of storage on your sled you need the saddle bbags for more stuff.

Yamaha windshield bag for small items, Yamaha tank bag with map pouch for medium sized items, and rear bags for larger items and trips. All the bags have their uses. I use a modified Choko rear bag for a rev ski-doo, holds way more stuff than Yamaha rear bags.

The Yamaha rear bag works ok for a couple of days on the trail, but for a 7-8 day trip found that the Polaris three compartment set best. Top compartment plus two side bags. Holds way more than the Yamaha 3 compartment bag. Good fit; I just slit a piece of plastic tubing and tape to the sharp edge on the running boards. This is my wife's sled and she packing a lot more than you or I would .

Avoid "premium" bags

I got a set of the premium bags last year, in preparation for a saddlebag trip. First ride, the strap pulled loose on the trail (bags empty), and then they were hanging off the back of the sled. By the time I noticed, the bag had a large melted hole from the exhaust.

Back to the dealer for another set. This time, I didn't put them on until the long trip. One week, 1200 miles, clothes in the bags. By the time the week was over, the interior panels were torn, three of the four straps pulled out of the bags, and the felt bottom was rubbed through and torn. I have taken them to the dealer to see if warranty will cover them. I'll be surprised if they do. These are the ones: http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/acces ... etail.aspx

Now, I'm going to replace them with the saddlebags: http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/acces ... etail.aspx

Good luck!

I should have tried my dealer for warranty... I have went through 2 of those, same issues. Now I wear a back pack. I still have the tank bag, which has been fine for 3 winters.

We'll see

I'll let you know what the new ones look like. I think they will be better. If not, then I guess it'll be aftermarket. The real issue with the "premium" ones is that the straps aren't attached well. They should go all the way across and have stitching all along, rather than just a 1 inch square at the end.

So I got the saddlebags and the trunk bag. The more I look at them the more I think they are going back. Aka the straps are only sewn with a single stitch. I don't understand why. It's obvious that with any weight they will come apart. Cortech bags for a motorcycle are much better quality for similar cost. And the straps are stronger, and sewn much better. Two inch squares are sewn with double stitching. So I think im going to try something like those instead. Good luck all!

The only person I know that had a Yamaha tank bag was Nick1945 and he complained that the bag scratched the paint on the tank cover. Did you have Viper saddle bags when you rode your Viper? I kept my Viper saddle bags and think that they would work just fine on my RS. I havent planned any saddle bag trips for a few years so havent really tried to mount them on my sled yet. G.B.
