Viper Updates...

Thanks. We are pretty stoked to be on the Vipers. Dependability is the name of the game in this race. Our biggest dilemma will be to stretch out or stay at 141. Choosing the shock package and ski's will also be fun. Like everything, it'll depend on the snow conditions and the budget. I was just looking at the 3 wheel kit...very nice, but I'll wait for the 4. I suspect they'll be on our sleds.

This is my first post on here. Spring ordered my RTX SE the beginning of last march. I'm really starting to get the itch now and figured I would share some info off of Yamaha Snowmobiles, USA Facebook page.

- 2014 SR Viper Updates! We will have a new belt to match the new center distance on the Viper sleds. The new number is 8JP17641, and MSRP in the US right around $100! The construction is essentially that of the legendary 8DN, just in a new dimension.

- We will have extrovert drivers on all of the SR Viper models. The sleds will use the same lightweight one-piece design as the FX Nytro models have in the past.

- All SR Viper models will come standard with aluminum tunnel protectors. Not only will this protect the inside of the tunnel from track slap, it will also stiffen the sled.

- All SR Viper models will have a simple seat latch and stiffer seat pan for easy access to the battery and. We have also softened the seat foam since the spring prototypes for a more comfy ride.

- All of the SR Viper models will come standard with a black radiator and screens on the center louvers of the hood.

- There is a new race-style brace on the brake caliper to maintain alignment of the brake system.

- This is the last of the 2014 SR Viper Updates! The three SE models, SR Viper RTX SE, SR Viper LTX SE and SR Viper XTX SE will all feature Fox FLOAT 3 shocks with Kashima coating for reduced friction.

I see there is a new longer belt, did they indicate what the center distance would be?

Great info!

I need to look again but something looks different on the secondary clutch.
I bet I can tell ya what it is,the yammie secondary outside dia. is larger than the cats secondary, but the driveshaft/rotor are in the same vertical plane, this will be my problem once I mount up my apex secondary to franks m300 jackshaft, the larger clutch has less area for the belt removal cause the rotor is so close, that and the fact that I and some of us with cats have a top cover over the rotor,so it keeps snow which turns to water off the belt,so it wont slip.

Just remove the secondary every 3000 mi for belt change ;)!

I was comparing the one pictured to the secondary on other Yamahas. Maybe its just lack of a windage plate. I find it amazing that I have only had 3 belts on my Phazer and all are still good with 11000mi on sled which has no venting and body work that actually is wrapped around the clutch. Heat from motor sure doesnt seem to be a issue here! Wish you luck on your conversion.

Could be a larger diameter secondary.
No way that new secondary on the viper is larger than all other apex/nitro because there is just not enough room now,the yammie clutch is 10.800 measured w/12" verniers about .100 thou. larger than cats procross clutch,it is so close now when a belt balloons just the slightest it rubs on the rotor area.

Thanks,i think a lot of the reason we don't have belt issues with our yamahas are one they are mounted more solid, torsional secondary, shorter c t c distances, and overall less hp,when you compare the phaser at 80 hp to an apex at 150hp than that to a turbo at 180 hp than that to a boosted one at 230-320 hp it just keeps getting worse the higher the hp goes, than worse again when the jackshaft and engine moves all over the place, but this new viper appears to be mounted solid, has no TCL so it don't float, yamaha clutching, hyvo gears and chain, and a manual adjuster to chain tension,Bingo a good sled, and at 135 hp will create less heat, heck even if it was boosted to that 135 hp w/turbo undehood,i still think you would not have any issues, and I am even willing to go out on a limb and say those who boost this motor up to 230 hp will still not have any problems.

Wish I would have measured the Viper secondary. Maybe its just the pics. As for the HP I dont think so since I rode with a 12 1100 NA SnoPro that took out 3 belts I know of last season.
