Since I have never run low enough on oil to witness it first hand.
How low on oil are you before the oil light will come on with the RX models?
And how low on oil can you be before the engine starts seizing?
Not that I would allow this to happen, but just curious!

I get my light right at a quart low. Actually maybe a little less, if I add a qt i over fill it. still LOTS of oil left.
Yup mine is at 1 quart low.

My 03 LE uses a little oil..........the light comes on at about a pint low......or more correctly a pint takes it back halfway between E & F. As I've stated many times before.........E does not mean "Empty" it means "Enough"
it should be when the engine is warm and the stick is sitting in the tank not threaded in.
I have never had the light come on for oil. I have tried to make it come on and it did not, by running the motor with the dip stick removed for a couple of seconds. I have tested the sensor with an ohm meter and it checked out o.k. Just figured that it took awhile longer running before the light came on.?.
So I don't know when the light comes on, how low it actually is and when does it seize since none have happened to me. Knock on wood!

Well I blew 2 and the lights did not come on. and they don't sieze they explode.
Traditionally they break the connecting rods and the block gets several holes and the piston slaps the head and wipes it out.
they make pretty yard planters.

I'm still curious! How low on oil can you run these engines before they bite the bullet! And is it possible if your running full synthetic that even though you might be extremely low on oil the synthetic oil will give it an added buffer of protection?
Not the oil question.
You'll hear full synthetic and nothing else because of the high temp. break down point.
Then the blend comes in with full synthetic has smaller molecules than the mineral so having both they mesh well creating less friction.
Then mineral comes in with I've been around and they just don't make things like they use to! Plus larger molecules means leaks less. Costs less and uses less, ain't that the american way?
Good question and I wish I had your answer!

I was changing my oil and filter tonight and I put some oil in the filter than finished the 2 qts in the tank, started it and the light came on after warmed up may be a full minute then shut off and added another 1.7 qts and she was at the f mark but not the line above. So I left it.
To answer your / I know the light is on when down 1.7 qts from full but not sure how much below E before comes on.
Budda you kill me E for enough...actually makes some sense if this is just a reservoir that a pump draws from.....anyway made me laugh thanks

In the case of my 03 I just ride it till the light comes on (bout 170 mi). Pour a qt in and when checked it is usually just on the high side of the full mark.

Well running low on oil versus out of oil can cause different types of damage.
When your running a 10500 rpm motor with high g's through turns and the oil is low you can cause momentary starvation that interupts the cushion that the rod bearings ride on. I don't care if its mineral based or fully synthetic this causes premature wear on those bearings with a lot of stress and load on them. the cylinder walls and rings are less likely to suffer damage, due to residual lubrication, from short term flow interuption.
I can tell you these motors are not like a 2 stroke. The rods are not riding on needle bearings, and unlike 2 strokes that just sieze up from poor lubrication and can be run after they cool down these explode. Both of mine made no noise and gave no notice of trouble.
The first one detonated at over 100 mph and just went pow no perceptable knock or noise of any type (oil pump failure). The second happened at about 50 mph the exhaust sound changed (which I believe was the #2 rod letting go and before I could hit the kill switch #3 let go. both motors have holes the size of a baseball on the back side of the mid block, the cranks are wiped out and the pistons bounced off the bottom and flew up into the heads ruinning any chance of salvaging parts. I do have 2 startes that are in good shape and carbs from one and fuel injection from the other.

WOW! What are the odds of having 2 RX engines blow up for one owner? They have got to be astronimcal! Considering these engines are pretty reliable

I'm thinking of going to Vegas

I'm a firm believer in Full Synthetic Oil and I've been using it in everything I own for almost 20 years now without ANY problems! Cars, SUV's,Motorcycle's,ATV's,Snowmobile, Garden Tractors, etc...
I will continue to use it because of it's ability to extend oil change intervals, better cold weather starting, extreme heat protection, and protection under EXTREME conditions. I have heard and read many stories regarding this fact, but I think Castrol does a good demonstration of it. I personally use Mobil 1.
