I want some fatter skis for my MP. I have the skinny tuner skis now. I like the looks of the powderhounds but wonder what the taller 1.25" keel on the 8" will do to steering on trails, compared to the 1" keel on the 7"? Anybody? I ride a lot of trails but like to play in the deep.

I honestly don't know how the higher keel will do but I do know that when I had the Trailhounds, it darted pretty bad. And there are no dual carbides for these skis. I wound up installing Camoplast all-terrain 7" skis with Double Down carbides. No more darting.

4" or 6" double downs? You don't run studs right?

No studs but it's a 1.5" track. Because it's a long track, I went with 6".

I would still suggest 6" to overcome the long track's desire to keep you going straight.

I rode with powder hounds on last 2 sleds. At slow speeds they do turn a little hard, like 10mph or less. Past that don't even notice them.

I have 7" PH's (w/6" Studboy carbides) on my VL and 8" PH's (with 9" TP's) on the TF with no problems. I have also used the 8" skis on the VL and found them good. A big improvement over the original 5" stock skis that would really sink in the soft trails and cause a lot of hard steering. I don't do a lot of off trail riding but the one disappointment with the PH's is that they do not turn well in soft snow - but with those heavy machines I don't know if there is a ski that would.

Could you give me a complete list of items including mounting kits that I would need to put this setup on my VL? I've found the skis for as little as $116.

I have the Yamaha 7 inch vk style skis with the quali pieces cobra head 6in carbide, they handle almost as good as the snow trackers do! pretty much can drive one handed without the darting, and the vk skis give good flotation it keeps the machine level in deep snow. Too wide of a ski makes the back sink or trench giving a nose up feeling making the skis less responsive thus more tippy! Hope this helps!

It's been a while. can't remember specific part numbers but apart from the skis, you'll need a mounting kit and the double down runners from Snow Studs, who have them listed on their site. I had these skis on a Doo REV chassis before and I think I modified the rubber damper to fit.

I have 8 inch Powderhounds with 3 inch carbides, no studs. I don't think I'm typical of the guys on here, I'm am icefisher and I troll sloooow. I like the skis because they are insurance for getting out of deep overflow slush. They allow me to play around in the drifts and if the lake is windswept or I'm following tracks only the keels contact the snow anyway.

That said, the lake was slow to freeze and I've put on 800kms playing around in the bush. With the powderhounds on this isn't even the same sled it was last year. I couldn't do a thing on it last year. Now I am breaking trails on my own and the comealong hasn't come out yet. I know that due to its weight it is never going to be too fleet of foot in the deep stuff but so far, by going easy, I'm getting in and out of places I couldn't touch last year.

Directly to Al's question, I don't think there will be much difference between 1 or 1 1/4 inch keels on trails. If the snow is firm both heights will keep the rest of the ski off the snow. I like what the 8's do in deep snow and I know you will see way more powder than I will. I expect the only on a soft heavy trail would the 8's not be my preference.

Doesn't matter which PowderHound you get, it's the same mount kit across all their ski models. IIRC, the Phazer has narrower spindles than the VL/MP so some adjustment will be necessary but it will fit. Isn't that right @YukonMP ?
