also, is the number on the bearing a UB205 NSK?
Another way Yamaha has added more weight to an already over weight sled? Maybe to help keep debris off the seal face?
I think it just helps keep the driveshaft centered properly so that the drivers stay aligned with the track windows. If the driveshaft needs to be moved right or left during installation to align drivers, the collar needs to be loosened, the bearing moved and the collar re-tightened to ensure the driveshaft stays where it should. My take on it anyway.

I never understood the purpose of it either, it turns freely on the bearing. The little windows makes it easier to fine the set screws when you are under there in the dark, thats about it.

UB205 is the correct number on the seal of the NSK bearing. That white plastic cover does have a higher inside edge than outside edge so it may ward off some water or snirt, but it doesn't fit completely tight to the seal, so it may be only partially effective in that respect. So maybe it is as twiz28 said, more to help the visually challenged find the set screws.
Or does it serve as protection for the set screw because the top of the screw does stick out of the collar? All I know for sure is, some Apexes did not have this plastic, while some Nytros did, but same bearing.
