I am looking at an 03 RX-1 that is studded. It looks to have about 144 studs with the outside of the track having studs.
I have never owned a sled with studs, but have wanted to. I do a lot of trail and lake riding. I also like to go off trail and do some climbing. Is it likely that I will tear my track with the type of riding that I do?
Also what do I need to do to prevent the studs from hitting the exchanger or the tunnel when riding hard through bumps?

The 03 RX-1 has tunnel protectors so as long as the studs aren't too long, you should be OK.
The 03 RX-1 came stock with a 1" lug height track. Adding studs was a good option on this sled as track lacked sufficient grab for that sized motor. I have 96 studs down the center in my 03 RX-1 and it works really well. Over 4,500 miles and not one problem with the track or studs.
My only concern on the sled you are looking at are the studs on the outside of the track as this is where people tend to encounter problems. How many miles are on the studded track? Are there any tears in the track? Are there any bent or broken studs?

No tears or broken studs as far as I know. I guess what I really worry about is if I bottom the sled or if I am climbing a hill and the track is spinning. Regardless of where the studs are won't that do damage?
What about an 05 being studded up the center? Any concerns?

I have 96 studs down the center on both the 03 and the 05 RX-1. I have bottomed them both and there are no problems as the tunnel protectors prevent damage.
With studs on the outer portion of the track, it will be more difficult to swing the back end around in the corners because of the added traction. It will require a little more effort to turn on hard pack conditions because the extra traction will be pushing the sled forwards.
If the sled is in good condition, I wouldn't worry too much about the extra studs though. You can always get a new RipSaw track for about $325 from Tracks USA.

Yup, I agree with everything said. I have a 03 with 128 (96 up center and every third on outside) and I am thinking about pulling the outside studs altogether this year. It makes an already tippy sled even more tippy as the back end just will not slide. Also, if you plan on doing ANY off trail climbing, DON"T. The 03 stock track, studded or not, is a trail track only. I got burried in just a foot of powder on level going last year with the same setup as your talking about. The RX1 is just too heavy to climb with, especially in 03.
