Will the Sidewinder ever have competition?

And Yamaha didn't even use their A game on the winder.... they used parts & pieces from the vector motor , if they wanted to dig deep it would have had ti & magnesium parts used in the current R1M motor ( titanium valves, rods etc.) ,& nothing still beats the throttle response yet of the Apex based the 2004 R1 motor ,
it would be really cool to have this dash & iPad app on the sidewinder

Not to burst anybody's bubble (especially if their Sidewinder is stock), but a bone stock Doo 850 with our clutching in testing..... is clicking 99.6 mph in 660ft. on snow.

A tuned or flashed Sidewinder will still be king
How much is your clutch kit ??? How much is a flash for 270 hp on tap .....& really only need to replace the weights to make it work ok .

YA but real heavy ,built sled around motor? YamaCat way better motor wise, put motor in sled didn’t build around it.

I don’t know I beat them stock, as long as I hook,

What does a stock sidewinder with your clutching run in the same distance?

Just wait and see the first of the Boutique-Build all Yamaha sleds may just be that boosted 4-cylinder as the average guy doesn't want to spend $25K+ American on a snowmobile.

Folks should not call that 900t small. In the Maverick X3 it's a smokin' powerhouse. And I think plenty have wicked it up. Let's just be realistic here, when it is that easy for the aftermarket to tune these up, Sidewinders and Ace engines, why should the OEM's do it and face the potential backlash of making it unstable.

If anything, BRP, Yamaha and AC have learned from Polaris' mistake in the Turbo RZR market. You can sell them, your customers can burn them down, and you will pay for them as an OEM. Best thing to do as an OEM is to release the most stable platform you can, that is reliable and you have no issues selling a 5 year extended warranty on. Then let the owner wick it up, push it's limits etc on it's own dime. The MFG now retains a customer. BRP and Yamaha both released their turbo's and underpromised. Remember the original HP spec from Yamaha on the sidewinder. Ya, we got over that real quick when we realized they were just under promising. They didn't lose any sales once word got out it was 200+hp.

I have a feeling this is why Textron Off Road is taking so much time to release their Wildcat XX Turbo. They want to release that 998T engine in the most stable platform and not become the next RZR Turbo Forest Fire. Respect to Smokey the Bear. (or Textron may be considering a Weber engine to put in once the Yamaha-Cat agreement is terminated, oops, did I open another can of worms?)

Same goes for the 900t. It will be a rock solid competitor in the 150-160hp range, and probably a very good Apex replacement. I would bet SkiDoo will get some of their Etec 800 riders who are thinking of going 4-stroke. And, Ski Doo can believe they have put it out in a very stable package that has loads of potential for tuning.

I agree with the statement above, that a lower CC, low boost model is needed in the market as well. Get the size/weight down, but offer great performance and efficiency. And with these tune-keys, they could be ridden on a saddlebag trip and get exceptional mileage, or drop in the insanity-key and burn gas like women go through toilet paper.

PS: the car MFG's do this and it works for them. And I hate to admit this, but the 2.0ltr Ecoboost engine in my wife's Ford Escape is a blast to drive. Say that with a straight face while retaining your mancard.

We have a brand new 900 Ace Turbo here for a muffler, I have to admit they are a well built sled! I don't think the power output will be there to compete with the 998 but it is a fuel system and turbo away from it being competitive!

With fuel system and larger turbo, but without building motor up, or does anybody think the motor is good enough?

All our clutch kits are $299.95 US.
A tune can be anywhere from around $300-$500 and up more with full race tunes.
As mentioned, sorry to burst anybody's bubble, but that 850 that is testing our clutching hasn't lost to a Winder yet, in stock class.

Yes, stock for stock, a stock Sidewinder will beat a stock 850 Doo everytime......until now. The clutch kit we are final testing on the 850 Doo gained 16 mph in 660ft. over a stock 850 Doo.

Difference from a stock Sidewinder to a Thunder Products clutched Sidewinder is 2.5 sled lengths in 330ft., 4 sled lengths in 660ft. and has way better pull on top end where the Sidewinder starts to taper off at 116mph. @Keith Schmitz gained mph and had no problem seeing 123mph out of a Thunder Products clutched stock Sidewinder.

I guess time will tell on that one, if it is anything like the 1200 doo, it should handle a lot of power.

Reasons i believe there won't be any more 200 plus sleds:

1. Although Polaris is rumored to have a 4-stroke, by the time they put it out & perfect it, the HP trend will probably sway backwards.
2. DOO still does not want their OWN 4-s to be more powerful then their OWN 2-s since they promoted 2-s so hard. (and bashed 4-s weight)
3. I think the manufacturer's are feeling 200 may be the limit.
4, They scare me!

Steve #2 couldnt be more true. And until they decide on which sled will be their flagship sled and swallow their pride admitting the hypersled world is boosted 4 strokes they will still be peddling etecs. Food for thought: my boosted winder takes 3-4 bucks less fuel than an 850xrs. Brp is all about fuel mileage. They will tune up their 900t next year because a 1000etec will be even worse on fuel.

A brp tech from valcourt told me he can flash the 900 to 200hp. after that there have been rods bending and breaking. Not sure of that since they're getting more than that from the mav. But is it reliable?
