xp vs apex

wow, this hole 4th page had been dedicated to videos and pics of broken xp's. Just wondering what the point of this was?? I dont remember anyone saying they were running out to get one tommorow so why try so hard to convince other ty members that the xp's are junk. No need to stir the pot for nothing.

Just in case.

Why not, they give it to us big time over on DOO-TALK...

the axles breaking on the xp, is actually a very very smal percentage of the sleds
out of 40.000+ xps sold...only a handfull have had this problem

exactly!! when you consider ski doo sells 3-1 versus yamaha its not that big of a deal really. Our dealer has already sold over 150 and 1 has returned with a broken shaft. Things look worse on the net because of all the users, heck alot of people dont even join these forums till they have a problem of some sort and need help. I think there all the best when they get you home but when you gotta walk or have your sled in the shop for a week then suddenly its a POS

skidoo has about 40% of market and the other 3 manufactures each have about 20%. that means they produce about 2:1 over the rest. i say produce not sell because the 05,06, and 07 doos that are piled up in many dealers lots are not sold, and probably never will be since i hear the doo boys calling the revs dinosaurs since the tupperware flyer came out. maybe doo can take the revs back to the factory and melt them down to produce driveshafts and axel wheels.

Yesterday I rode with a REV-XP MXZ X 800R, a REV-XP MXZ Adrenaline 800R, a REV 600SDI, an Apex ER and of course my 07 RTX.

Even though one of the REV-XP's already has well over 4000 trouble free km on it, none of the REV-XP riders could cruise at high speeds on twisty trails. I suspect tightening the front limiter strap further would help, but they already have their weight transfer set at minimum and the sleds are still not handling very well.

At high speeds on rough trails, the REV-XP MXZ X did well though, not quite as fast and stable as my 07 RTX (now that the shocks are very well damped with Mike Carver's custom valving), but very good for a stock sled - probably the best I've seen stock and totally blowing the doors off the stock 07 RTX setup.

Lining the REV-XP MXZ X 800R up against my 07 RTX, I took it by 1-2 sled lengths off the line, he then hooked up and took me my 2-3 sled lengths through mid-range (I was still spinning) and we then stayed that way up to about 75 mph. We only lined up once and traction or "lane choice" would have had a significant effect. One thing for certain, the REV-XP-800R is no slouch as far as acceleration goes. My sled's drivetrain is close to stock, except I have my secondary wound to only 60° in attempts to lower the WOT rpms a little (still 11,000 at high speeds).

We swapped sleds and I tried the MXZ X for a little while. Handling wise I really didn't like it (Note I did not try tuning the suspension though). There was far too much body roll for me, too much push in the corners, and once I gave it any throttle the skis would lift (even with the weight transfer on min) and it would only go straight. The trail conditions were very hard packed with incredible traction. The suspension on the MXZ X was very nice - both plush and capable of big bumps without bottoming. My 07 RTX with an aggressive Carver revalve is noticably firmer riding than the MXZ X. As far as overall comfort, riding position and ergonomics, the REV-XP is an excellent fit for me (so is the 07 Apex RTX though). Of course the biggest things I didn't like were the smoke, smell, and vibration - especially at idle.

To my absolute annoyance (because I currently am riding my RTX), all of the REVs, including the REV-XPs with 800Rs blew the doors off the two Apex sleds for fuel economy. The REV-XP's fuel tanks hold 5-6 liters more fuel and they got about 20% better fuel economy than the Apex's. Skidoo also offers auxiliary fuel tanks to provide even more over the already incredible fuel range. The REV 600SDI also blew the doors of the Apex for fuel economy (but we already new that).

While the Adrenaline has been trouble free over 4000km, the MXZ X's handwarmers don't work at all. The sled is brand new so it is likely a (very annoying) manufacturing issue.

Overall the REV-XP is a nice lightweight, powerful sled with excellent fuel range, but the things I don't like about it are:

1. The biggest issue for me is the smoke and 2-stroke stink.

2. The REV-XPs burnt 3 liters of oil each in only a single ride. I don't know the price of the oil, but I expect it is in the $10+ per liter range.

3. The cornering was far from ideal due to the ski lift and weak front sway bar. Most likely this could be resolved through tuning (tightened limiter strap, reduced center shock preload and hopefully a stiffer aftermarket/Skidoo sway bar).

Quite honestly, if it wasn't for the fact that they are 2-stroke, vibrating, oil guzzlers, I would have to say the REV-XP would make an excellent sled.

We ride our sleds hard and I've never seen one of the REVs suffer from our aggressive riding ever. With over 4000 aggressive, trouble free km on the one REV-XP, I can say with certainty that at least not all REV-XPs break down (and we are a riding crew that have had every single failure mentioned at TY4stroke by anyone with our Apex sleds - especially monoshock suspension failures, chaincase oil leaks, idler wheel failures, exhaust donuts and y-pipes). Being totally honest, out of the sleds I ride with, the Yamaha top performing 4-strokes have required the most maintenance by far - but I still can't stand the 2-stroke smoke, smell, oil consumption and vibration.

good review, thanks!

xpx800

Great review rex, last year you and i swapped ideas for out 07 rtx apex's,i now have the 800xpx with 530 miles on it,all very hard miles, nothing except my hand warmers have failed to date, and because it had the alum. bars doo figured they would fail, and they replaced them quickly for me. My sled did no handle for me right out of the gate, and i new my weight would be a factor, after listening to some who are much lighter than i am,and they were crashing thru there rear springs on the big hits,so i had my dealer swap out all three rear springs for the ones for my weight, 235# riding weight, and man it may be a little stiff at set down studdr speeds, but man i can absolutely crush the 2-3 footers at max speed thru any lg. trail, and now i finally have the front end figured out, soften the front preload down to second notch up from softest, and set my compression screws on front shocks near max,and it rails around all trails, small and tight and twisty,i have stock skis and drilled out the outside area, and put in my stock 4" carbide, and installed doo's 6" agressive carbide down the middle, tightened up my limiter one hole, and tightened doen the preload on the front rear coilover shock some, set my rear torsion springs up one notch from soft, and have transfer block set to one down from max transfer,it hooks up awsome on hard pack, but still slides some in turns so i can run into and out of my corners under power, but i did cut down the 1.25 ripsaw, added 126 1.175 woody's down the middle, and on snow it runs 110 gps and it is clutched and geared.
