Here was my process,
2018 VK Pro, EPS, 13,000 kms

- slow to crank, worse in the cold,
- no start, found starter electrically "open"
- tappy tappy and spun it backwards, would crank but still slow
- next no start decided to change starter......this is what I found.

Oil in starter, pinion shaft oil seal failed starter full of oil. Brushes worn, burned, corroded.

Removed : secondary clutch, oil tank and filter, air box, battery and craddle, 1 long rear engine mount bolt, 2 front engine mount bolts, steering rack shifted to one side. This gave enough room to remove engine up and pull starter through oil filter access plate hole.
