2016 viper mpi 180 turbo failure at 64 miles

I have a 2016 viper mpi turbo yamaha dealer installed . With 64 miles it blew out the front of the motor in Mont valin quebec. So don't have any doubt about the engine failure problem. Also we were only cruising at 50 mph. Yamaha is in deep trouble.

from my understanding, so far everyone who has had this problem with the weaker rods has gotten a new motor right from yamaha, and pretty fast too. its a bad deal they changed the design of the "internals" of this motor to fit more applications. doesn't make sense to me. but there are standing behind this problem and fixing it. not sure if the new motors have any stronger rods than yours did. P.S. i like your red and white sled. any chance you run gauges for boost and AFR? and was the boost controller unhooked or updated? or when was the turbo built on the sled?

Thanks It is a 8-2015 build and the dealer installed the turbo in November. I did the mpi updated boost controller with the recommended clutch kit with more weight on the primary. I didn't do the boost or a afr gauges. This was the first ride. I would hope the new motor would be much improved!

I heard through grapevine two sources the first 16 new motor NON turbo has had rod failure. XC race sled motor almost cut in half!

have 500 miles on my 2016 viper mtx no issues runs great build date 3-15-15

I was able to see one of these sleds on the snow for the first time today. It was towed off the mountain with the front end of the engine grenaded. Glad to hear Yamaha is coming through for people. An extra year of warranty would be a nice touch.

Man that sucks big time!!! Not meaning anything to you OP, but I thought I read somewhere in instructions. The MPI Kits are NOT to be installed on 2016 models? The couple guys in this post with the 16's build in early/mid 2015 i'm assuming have the 15 engine??

Hopefully they take care of you hassle free and quickly! Post pictures of what actually broke if you don't mind (when you get home).

There was a recommendation when they first started to have issues. It was only one the Canadian site. It's my understanding they have removed that disclaimer.

Many of us already had our machines when this came out. At no time has Yamaha contacted me with warnings or for any other reason.

I will ride mine and if it blows then so be it.
